My day care seems to handle it like many others have said. Subbing in a teacher from another room, or the director will help out. Honestly though, I feel like this only propogates the germs though. Every once in a while, I hear about some GI virus that is going around the toddler room, and I just PRAY that they don't need to sub in a teacher from that room to the infant room so all the little babies get sick. Even with good handwashing, it makes me nervous!

@Thehistoryofus: @mrs. wagon: Yeah, sounds like several of the toddler room teachers are sick too. The director will be one of the infant teachers today!

If one teacher isnt there they usually will just bring in teachers from another class, but they have never asked us to pick our child early. that would bother me a bit considering the cost of daycare

Whoa, it has not happened before but this flu season is extreme so I can see it happening. They would probably call in ex-interns or ex-part time people to fill in if the current teachers were wiped out. There should also be a lot of kids out sick so they should need less staff?

When I worked in a daycare we had "floaters" that would fill in if teachers were sick. So it was never an issue. Hopefully they figure it out, yikes!

Wow. Our daycare has a lot of part time float staff, so they cover that way.

@autumnlove: Wow that is crazy. I guess that is one advantage of a larger center. They pretty much always have a supply of subs. Every day they have a floater teacher that can fill in and 2-3 people up front that can step in.

I got upset with them because even though they open at 6:30, there were times they didn't have enough staff clocked in to stay in ratio until around 7:30. I used to leave my daughter with the front desk staff and tell them they needed to watch her until they had the right ratio in the rooms.

holy moly!! oh my.

Our daycare has lots of part time float staff and lots of the kids are not full time, so a lot of shuffling goes on. Teachers go back and forth, classes combine some days, etc. But during epidemics like this I'm sure this could happen! Although if the teachers are sick, no doubt a lot of kids would stay home sick as well :(

DH just texted me after dropping off LO at daycare....3 of the 4 infant teachers called in sick and they are scrambling for subs. The director told him we might have to pick her up early. :-(

What happens at your daycare when they are short staffed?
