It was definitely much easier when they were infants. But I recently flew from west coast back east alone with an almost 4 and almost 2 year old alone on a red eye and they did fantastic. I didn't even have to use electronics.

15 months was still ok for us. 18 months - 2 yr was rough. It's much much better when they get their own seat!

Younger was better. I traveled for about 8 hours (4 hr flight + 1 hr layover + 3 hr flight) when LO was 2 mo and 2.75 mo and she slept most of the way. I took a 3 hr nonstop flight with her at 5 mo and it was a little challenging (she wouldn't sleep) but otherwise fine. I just had to work to occupy her because she wanted to be on the floor scooting around, not being held.

I was traveling with her alone each time, it would have been easier had I had someone to hand her off to. It was also waaaay easier when they let me take her carseat onboard.

@rrachael: hope it got better. We do only daytime flights just in case, so we can get back on schedule for the night and the next day. Dd has trouble napping on planes too!

We traveled with her @ 5months and it was a breeze. She was still EBF so I didn't need to pack food, her poops didn't stink and she slept all the time and anywhere.

So far this trip is fine with her being 10 weeks. She's been really adaptable which is a relief!! I am traveling again with her at 6 months, and then at Christmas when she'll be 8 months, I'm way more afraid of those trips!!

we didn't travel when charlie and olive were babies, but definitely under 6 months would probably have been easiest. 9 months was harder because they're mobile and antsier, but overall olive was a great little traveler then.

i think maybe 12-18 months is the toughest when they're new walkers so they want to move move move, but they're still young that they're not into tv. once kids are into tv it's much easier to travel! luckily olive just got into watching tv at 20 months -- just in time for our international trip next month!

LO is 1 and so far has been really good on planes, but I expect all of that to change once she can walk!!! I have a feeling once she can get away from me (haha) she won't be so content to sit in my lap.

i think anything from 1-6 months was pretty good. we had enough of a routine that i knew what to expect most of the time, but she wasn't mobile, didn't require much entertainment, and still took at least 3 naps a day. plus i was ebf, so we didn't have to worry about taking any food.

a car trip at 8 months wasn't too bad, but a flight at 9 months was exhausting.

now at 14 months, any kind of trip takes more planning because she rarely will sleep so needs plenty of entertainment.

So far, we've only taken 1 long trip - an international flight at 7 months and back at 8 months. It's wasn't easy. She was fussy and didn't just want to sit in the chair. At that age she was crawling and curious and we were also battling allergies so it wasn't fun at all. But now that she's 12 months, I think we'd have an even harder time. I'd imagine it would be ultimately difficult now that we'd look back fondly at our first flying experience.

I think the most difficult trip was when my son was about 18 months of age...it was a 6 hour flight and he was just not into sitting in the seat at that age.

I feel like every age presents its own challenges. When they are very young you have to attend to them constantly if they aren't sleeping. When they older, they can maybe be entertained more easily with an ipad or in flight films, but they also get bored and antsy and want to run around. That said, I think I prefer traveling with DS now as a toddler rather than as an infant. Maybe I've also gotten used to the stress of it too, so I deal with it much better.

From the time she was 3 months to about a year was the easiest to travel with her. After that she was too mobile to want to sit still for long periods of time so it made traveling a bit if a challenge.

I'm on a plane right now with my 6.5 month old (yayy WiFi on planes!) And so far I would say this is not easy. I'm bummed because lots of people said this is a good age ... But our flight was an hour delayed with us already on the plane and she pretty much cried and fussed for that entire hour. She's so curious ans wanted to touch/grab everything and was not into my attempts to get her to sleep. Finally she passed out as we started to taxi .... She's been asleep for 1.5 now and we have about 4 left ... So my fingers are crossed I can say it wasn't that had after all :P

So far our most successful trip has been at 6 months (also our longest trip) 3 8-9 hour car rides over about 4 days, and he slept through at least half of each (thank god, the weather was HORRIBLE--all icy and snow-stormy) and he was pretty calm when he was awake. We didn't get him on a good schedule until we got back, though.

We're going on a long trip next week and I'm a little bit nervous about it--I hope he sleep as much!

For us I'd say 4 months! A trip at 6 months wasn't bad either, but by then she was on a better schedule so she was a little less flexible.

Now at 9 months she is so completely aware of her surroundings and sensitive to them that I think she's going to have trouble the next time around...we shall see! :)

What about you? I hear toddlers are actually harder to travel with than babies!
