DS has just turned 6 months and I love seeing his reactions to different foods! He has just started, so he's only had a handful of things: mashed banana, porridge with banana & cinnamon, plain yoghurt, mashed avocado with lemon, pear (he insisted on gnawing on one I was eating!), baked potato with cheese, scrambled egg, broccoli florets and sliced mango. It was really fun (& a little nerve-racking...) to watch him completely devour a mango slice, lleaving the skin behind. Wow!

@Pumpkin Pie: I pretty much stopped using the food processor once I had this. Even now that we aren't doing purees I still use it to grind granola down to a better texture, for instance.

@regberadaisy: He showed signs of readiness at 4 months and our doctor signed off (he had reflux so she thought some cereal might help). He just took a few spoonfuls of cereal or puree once a day during the first month, then twice a day for 2 weeks. The last 2 weeks he's been eating 3 times a day. He still takes small portions - like an ounce each time, but he likes almost everything. Last week or so he's really been wanting to gumming things so he's been eating some soft table foods.

@MenagerieMama: I watched what textures LO was able to chew/swallow and kind of took it from there. We saw an allergist before 6 months and I have several food allergies and decided we wanted to expose him to everything early on, which has worked well. He loves to imitate us so we just make sure to take some food off his tray and eat it in front of him to let him know it's safe.

DS is 6 months. He's tried all the stage 1 fruits and veggies, turkey and chicken baby food with veggies, oats, barley, rice, salmon, egg yolk, and whole milk yogurt. We do mostly puréed foods with some soft finger foods like steamed apples and banana. He doesn't have teeth yet so he gums at it. So far he eats pretty much everything.

@MenagerieMama: wholesomebabyfoods; it's a really awesome site. It gives you ideas on when to start certain foods and why. Ie I never started meats till 9m because that's when babies start needing extra iron. I guess the iron from the fetus is stored in their body and it's used up by 9m. So it's particularly important for BF babies to start getting iron from elsewhere after 9m.

As a rule of thumb I try to start with non sweet foods first so they aren't turn off from foods that aren't sweet.

Imo grains are unnecessary. Believe me, I love my carbs and so does DD1! But anyway, I didn't do any grains with my older till closer than 10m. Even then I grinded my own steel cut oats. Or I would make congee with homemade chicken stock.

Allergen items there are rule of thumbs and what you and your ped decided. Honey is a definitive no till after one! Everything else seems to be interpretive. But I refained from eggs and shellfish till after one because my nephew is very very allergic.

@Pumpkin Pie: I'm only doing maybe one a day for now and barely even 1/2 oz. I didn't even go to 2x a day till 9-10m when daycare told me dd 1 was wanting more. I want breastmilk to be their primary source of nutrition till one. So for me I never stressed about offering solids till after one.

@MenagerieMama: the website that @regberadaisy: mentioned above is the one recommended by our pediatrician's office. They have printable charts for age groups and I started with the foods recommended for 4-6 months first and then branched out from there.

At 9 months he's had basics plus roasted vegetables that have handles like broccoli, steamed green beans/carrots/corn on the cob, pasta, meatballs, sausage, eggs (sometimes with a hint of sriracha or salsa), lots of hummus, pancakes, seaweed soup, miso soup, bone broth, black beans, avocado toast, kalbi jjim, pretty much everything we eat.

Peas, carrots, prunes, raisins, pumpkin, avocados, blueberries, blackberries, pears, banana, applesauce, oatmeal, barley. all just purées. I haven't exposed him to nuts or dairy yet. Trigger shy after DS1's allergies.

ETA: he is 8.5 mo but we started solids at 7 mo because he wasn't sitting up well. He has been slow to take to it.

At 12 months, so had tried pretty much everything we eat. No spicy foods yet, but a big selection of fruits, veggies, nuts (in butter or cream form), seeds, beans, crackers, bread, etc.

We also started with avocado and squash.

Frozen fruit in the teether was awesome. We also did blueberries in the feeder quite often.

Most fruits and vegetables. Zucchini sautéed in olive oil, cooked carrots, peaches, pears, bananas, and watermelon are his favorites. He love YoBaby yogurts and shredded cheese. Cottage cheese and cream cheese weren't such a hit. He loves puffs and this week we tried some other baby snacks and Cheerios. He's also had pasta, bread, cake (at a friends Bday party), and various meats. We do soft foods cut into little pieces. No BLW style because he has had some feeding issues. He will eat pretty much anything I put on his tray at 10.5 months and prefers to feed himself. At 6 months we mostly did fruit and veggies in the mesh feeder so he could be independent and explore tastes.

@Pumpkin Pie: I just prepare same as for our dinner minus seasonings for now. Then I either mash with a fork or purée with a immersion blender.

The butternut squash I was roasting for dinner and just left seasonings off some for her. Last night I made "glazed" carrots for dinner and mashed some for her. I try to minimize making separate foods to make life easier on myself!

I made most of dd1's food and plan to do the same for #2.

When she starts to eat more and you want to make a big batch on the weekends I suggest steaming as opposed to boiling. You retain more of the nutritional value that way.
Wholesome baby food is a great site to check out!

For vegetables, do you just boil, and then puree?

DD2 is just a week over 6m. So far we've tried roasted butternut squish, she was unsure at first then grabbing for it. Then avocados which she was not a fan; she made such a face! LOL
Last night she had carrots which she seemed to like.

Both girls are sick so we're making chicken soup from scratch later. Will give her some broth. Then this week Im going to make applesauce and probably give some frozen bananas in a mesh feeder for her teething gums!

What has your 12m & under baby tried so far?
