Right now DS has the same guidelines for liking a toy that the dog does - must be good for chewing. Beautiful, soft, adorable stacking toy my aunt bought from PBK? He barely looks at it. Giant plastic stacking rings at daycare? He grabs them out of another girl's hand and immediately start chomping, lol.

That they will love the most obnoxious light up loud toy someone gives them.

And that I can just turn them all off and hope LO doesn't notice sometimes they make noise and sometimes they don't.

My DD only plays with toys she picks out. I thought DD would love what I picked for her but she wont touch them.

We went to disney world last year and they have a million mickey dolls and she really wanted one. I picked one up for her and she said no she wanted a specific one and so I let her choose one and it is still her favorite doll.

DD loves her dolls, cooking toys and baby strollers.

@Bao: yes they are very pricey. i tried to buy a used set for years but none ever came up because no one sells them. my mom bought a set as a gift. i know some users posted a deal around christmas where an online store was offering something like a 20% coupon off anything on their site.

but generally they do not go on sale. the kids play with it pretty much every single day and it's totally been worth it. it's a toy that will get daily play for years!

I learned that having tons of toys out doesn't necessarily mean she will be entertained. Right now, we have her play kitchen, doctor's kit, some word puzzles, craft scissors and a pile of books on the main floor that entertain her plenty.

My son doesn't like his play kitchen or any of those Little People play sets, like the farm. He also doesn't care for anything that is not a vehicle, but he does like puzzles.

So, basically, I never know what to get for him.

that she will find a way to use it that is not necessarily what it was intended for! she's very good at imaginative/pretend play.

Before kids I always thought more toys meant more fun. I was obviously very wrong. A (can't speak so much for E yet), has more fun with less. I also learned that she isn't as interested in toys that make noise, light up etc. She's a big fan of open ended toys like blocks, little people, play-doh, coloring/crafts and things like puzzles or kitchen items/things that are not toys. She also loves looking at books. I'm happy to send away all of those annoying toys that randomly go off in the night!
