Things I wasn't sure I would like, I purchased used on craigslist so that I wouldn't feel bad later if I did regret my purchase. Items like:

Moby wrap - worth the $20 I paid but not $50 retail since I only used it indoors and only for the first 3 months.
Wipes warmer - paid $5 - was useless but not a big investment
Car seat cover - paid $5 - I use it all the time so totally worth it

I also try to buy all my big bulky toys used. If I paid full retail, I would feel the need to keep/store it for baby #2 (and I don't have the room) but since I paid a fraction of that, I either donate it, give it to a friend, or re-sell it on craigslist.

I just thought of something HUGE! I totally regret buying a custom fully-upholstered glider and ottoman for the baby's room. It looks really nice and is very comfortable, but we got a hand-me-down Dutalier glider (the kind with the wooden frame) and it's SO much more comfortable, and you can buy them for about 1/4 of the price I paid for our glider, not even counting what I paid for the ottoman. If I could go back, I'd buy a glider from costco.com and not even bother with the ottoman (a nursing footstool works just fine).

I regret buying nothing! Everything that I have bought has been useful.
There are a few things I wish I had bought (and probably will buy for Bebedeux)
An Ergo
Diaper Genie (or a better diaper pail)
A more basic baby monitor (for Baby #1, the Angelcare monitor is a bit more than I need for him at 8.5 months)
There's other stuff that I can't think of right now... It will come to me.

@Looch They have babiesrus, but there's only a few actual store fronts and they aren't as big with as much selection. I'm sure I'll find something eventually and, like I said, I'm mostly using it as my "thing" to be anxious about :)

@megwag: I thought there was a babiesrus uk version? We have a stroller by Britax, it's okay, but it doesn't do an umbrella fold, which is a pain for travel.
We also have a TFK jogger, which I love, it's just big. If I had to do it all over again, I'd go with either a City Mini or a Phil and Teds.

@Tequiero21 I keep looking and looking. My other problems are: I don't want something uber-expensive and lots of the ones that I read about on blogs that get raved about aren't available in the UK! I have a feeling I may be channeling my anxiety about the baby into buying this one product! :)

I'm super-paranoid about getting our stroller choice right. I really want to be able to buy one (plus maybe an umbrella stroller) that will have us covered for as long as we need it. I just can't seem to pull the trigger on what to get. There aren't any mega-stores where you can try them out here in the UK, and it seems like asking for trouble to order online without seeing it in person.

I don't regret anything, but I waited and did most of my purchases as I needed them. I also bought most things second hand. The one item I didn't get as much use of that I thought I would -- the moby. But I did love my bjorn.

We were lucky to get a lot of hand-me-downs (highchairs, pack n plays, clothes, toys, etc) so I was able to spend gift cards from my shower on an expensive swing... and I don't regret it at all since RJ loved it. It's now on loan to someone else, and I'll for sure be taking it back when we have baby #2, whenever that will be!

We had a lot of regrettable purchases but ended up returning most of them for merchandise credit or cash back. We made a LOT of trips to Babies R Us and fought with the managers a lot. Haha. And poor Rob Sr. had to assemble and disassemble a lot of stuff.

Someone got us an Ergo carrier which we like, but almost never used since RJ is a sweaty child. Even in winter he'd get soaked... and I would too! And in that same vein, we never regretted our expensive stroller since he preferred the stroller to being held.

I definitely would have gotten a lighter, smaller infant bucket seat. In fact, I think I'm going to do the whole trade-in thing when we have baby #2-- I think you can donate an old thing and get 25% off of a new thing. The Graco Snugride 35 is great but we didn't make it anywhere near 35 lbs (he's STILL not 35 lbs at 22 months!) before having to switch to the convertible car seat since 1) he was way too heavy to carry around in the bucket and 2) he didn't like laying back that far in the car anymore around 7 months.

i bought an expensive swing and sold it afterwards so i recouped some of the costs, but it's something you can definitely borrow or buy used because it's so big and you use it for such a short period of time.

i also bought a moby and couldn't get into it, but some people do love it.

sleep positioner was another thing i didn't use.

Biggest waste of money was the infant bucket seat, IMO. I hate it with a passion. It's cumbersome, annoying and has such a short lifespan for what it does. We only use the car on the weekends with our son, and he never slept in it and since we live on the third floor, it was soon very heavy to carry up and down the stairs.
Looking back I would have gone right to a convertible car seat.

I researched the hell out of all my big purchases so no regrets there but it's all the little items I regret buying: various teething devices (Sophie the giraffe, razberry, wooden teether), various anti-gas bottles, muslin blankets, electric nail filer, etc. All these items got great reviews but my LO just didn't like any of them.

@Chopsuey119, I bought the peg perego too and just switched to a convertible car seat at almost 11 mos. I don't ever regret purchases that ensure my child's safety and you shouldn't either. :) They do make one of the safest seats out there.

I didn't make too many baby purchases.. but biggest regret would probably be spending so much on an infant car seat. Bought a Peg Perego.. I think it cost about $250ish? Possibly more. At 7 months old, my LO's 29 inches long. 1 inch to go before she outgrows the seat.
