I found that actively trying to de-stress helped. I did hyponobabies exercises (like meditation) before bed, and found that helped. But my problem was going to sleep, not staying asleep, so I don't know if it would still apply.

@MrsB2012: I find this interesting because I use magnesium spray to help me sleep occasionally and for sore muscles from working out. It has helped put me in a deeper sleep (I think!) but I still tend to wake up at a crazy hour. Today was 0350 instead of like 0215. :meh:

I found liquid magnesium helped a little bit ( had to be liquid not the tabs) but it also made my stomach super upset the day after.
I ended up getting a prescription from my dr. It's actually for an antidepressant, but they use it as a sleep aid in very low doses too. It helped quite a bit, but I didn't like taking something regularly ( when I was younger I got dependent on sleep aids and it took a long time to wean myself off) so I only took it every few days or so to help catch up. I'd ask your dr for something for sure, there's lots of safe options

Unisom. FYI, there are two types -- both are safe for pregnancy. One has the same ingredient that makes you sleepy in Benedryl, the other is the one that also goes with B6 for nausea. Both worked from me, but you might find one works better than the other for you!

Second trimester was fantastic, first and third I was miserable with insomnia like yours, from the hormones, not from discomfort. I tried Unisom but for whatever reason, Benadryl worked better for me.

Yup, 1/2 tab of unisom for me too. I swear it also helps me fall back asleep now that I'm a million months pregnant and waking to pee 30 times a night.

I use half a tab of Unisom - the ones that are doxylamine succinate, not the other drug in the melts or whatever. They are the ones your doctor tells you to take with B6 if you are nauseated. 1 tab was too strong for me - I would be really groggy in the morning - and I'm a big gal. 1/2 a tab was perfect and I would sleep like a rock.

I have started Unisom, half a tablet (so about 12 mg). The full 25mg had me sleeping for 11 hours and I woke up feeling drugged-beware!

@matador84: I know one version of unisom is safe during pregnancy because they use it for morning sickness. I got that kind and took it occasionally when I needed it.
I'm sure I asked my OBGYN first but if I had to again I'd just do it.

I've been dealing with this since the day before I got my BFP. Unisom seems to make a difference for me and is considered safe during pregnancy. I'm still waking up several times throughout the night but fall asleep much more quickly both in the evening and with each wake up. Hope you can find something that works for you - exhaustion during pregnancy is miserable!

My sleep is absolutely awful when I'm pregnant. Not because I can't get comfortable, but because I never get a full night of sleep. I usually wake up around 2-3 am and stay up until my alarm goes off and then stay up all day on top of that until it's time to go to bed the next day. I'm definitely going to ask my doctor about it at my next appointment, but wondering if anyone had awful sleep while in their pregnancy and found anything to help.
