@littlebug: yeah I read the same thing- they can't accept cash. That's why I figured a small gift card to Dunkin' Donuts- and those are on every corner around here.

We never have, but I wonder if we should. Our carrier is terrible, but maybe that would get us better service?

@Foodnerd81: Our UPS guy the other day was SO excited and so thankful, it was so nice! He asked to take a pic, too, which I thought was super cute.

I think it's technically illegal to give postal workers cash? I thought I remembered reading that somewhere once. And also that a gift can't have greater than $20 value. I coudl be totally making that up, though.

That being said, we gifted our mailman a $15 Fandango gift card in a holiday card.

We don't do anything for the garbage collectors. I have no idea how many guys are on those trucks and they have the mechanical lifter/dumper thing.

ETA: Not making it up! http://usgovinfo.about.com/od/consumerawareness/a/gifts-for-the-mailman.htm

This is our first year in a house (in a Boston suburb). I left a card with a $10 dunkin gc taped to the side of the mailbox and one taped on the garbage bin. The garbage guy had left a card with his name on it the week before so I addressed it to him. I read online they can't accept cash or gifts over a certain level so I figured this was safe. Maybe it was cheap?

@Boogs: I did the same thing with the waters and snacks. We have lots of different delivery guys so I figure they are all covered with something. Keep meaning to put some baggies with homemade cookies too but forgetting. One guy said he appreciated it this morning!

We do the same as @yoursilverlining: and I also have a box of snacks and bottles of water for them to use during this busy season.

Not my photo, but something along these lines.

We do a $10 Starbucks card inside of a holiday thank-you card.

Ditto for our UPS guy (just for the Amazon deliveries alone lol)

Our mail is delivered to a community mailbox area. Plus the few times I have seen the mail person it hasn't been the same person. We get Amazon boxes a lot, if anyone deserves a tip it's those delivery guys. Sometimes boxes are delivered by private cars. Too many hands.

@hellobeeboston: Eep...sorry! We used to have guys that came and physically took it and put it in the truck too. So we would always tape it. Last year it remained taped to the toter, and we realized they got new trucks with the lift. So there went that!

@2PeasinaPod: oh man, garbage/recycling... i forgot about them! they come in the middle of the workday so I rarely see them, but I think I could pin a card or something onto the bin? they physically pick up and dump our recycling and garbage bins. We have a new company that just started a month or two ago, i cant even recall the name of the new service...

shoot. thought i had everyone covered.

@hellobeeboston: We do $20 here in a Philly suburb, so I think that's totally reasonable. We also have had the same mailman for the entire time we've been here (7 years), and we're pretty friendly with him. I think that's perfect.

Do you tip your garbage/recycling men? It's harder to do for us, because they essentially drive up to our toter, and a machine on the side picks it up and dumps it for them. So there's no real reason for them to get out of the truck unless there's a bulk item there. Recycling is the same way.

I'm trying to figure the right amount to tip our mailman.

I *THINK last year we gave him $25, that seem good? too high? too low??? .They work so hard, especially over the holidays with the long hours. We gave some cookies the other night when he dropped off a delivery at 8:30pm, but I figure I'll do a card with some money today.
