we planned for our LOs 1st bday to be in the park across from our house. The entire week leading up to it was gorgeous... and then day of was on and off rain and gale force winds. A few hours before I decided to just host it in our apartment (my cleaning lady had come the day before- if she hadn't I don't know what I would have done!). We had 40 people and it was tight but really fun.

@aprild: I think you just have to decide if you will 1) relocate, 2) delay for another date/time 3)cancel. As long as you know what option you are going to go with you're ok.

It sounds like a lot of the popular places probably book up early, but maybe there are lesser known indoor places. Even our Chick Fil A does bday parties with the indoor play house. Maybe thats a relocation idea.

It doesn't sound like the pavilion would be rescheduled so thats out.

Or you just note that you plan to cancel if weather is bad.

@regberadaisy: I don't know who I would call in a pinch, since all the party locations where I live book up months in advance. I guess it would come down to my house, but I really hope I'll have nice weather if I go the outside route.

@aprild: oh. I don't mean book back up locations. I just meant have a few you can call up in a pinch. Unfortunately, the risk of an outdoor party is either cancel it, squeeze into your home or pay for another place.

@regberadaisy: The problem with backup locations is I would have to pay for them. All the bounce houses around me or other indoor play places require payment in full and no refunds, so I would be paying for two parties.

The only backup option that would be free is if we had it at home, but our house really isn't big enough to host a bunch of kids and their parents

Not us but my DS's friend had a party outside and it rained - I texted the mom and she said it was still on because it was non refundable and they were booked for the rest of the summer.

Kids were 5 yr old and could care less - they ran around and played and got wet - parents stayed under the pavilion

I would probably have some back up locations on hand. Our neighbor's daughter had a backyard pool party planned last summer. The night before it started pouring cats & dogs and never stopped the next day till like 4pm! The morning of her mom was calling all around to different indoor places. Luckily she found an opening at Bounce Magic. She called all the parents and relocated the party.

We had a backyard pool party planned for DD2's first (august) party and it was just way too cold to go in the pool. Even if it rained it would've been fine because our house is big enough to accommodate the guest list.

We have a summer babe and did a popsicle themed beach party, last year. We indicated on the invitation that poor weather would cancel the party. I probably would have rescheduled it with close family and friends, on another day. We kept the specifics really low key. Luckily, it was a beautiful day!

Does anyone have this worry if you are hosting a birthday party outside? Both my kids have summer birthdays, and I was thinking about renting a pavilion at one of the public playgrounds and letting all the kids run and play. But I'm worried about possible rain and the fact that if it rains, the pavilion is nonrefundable. If you have hosted an outside party, did you have a backup plan in case of rain, or did you just hope for the best? Any success or horror stories you would like to share?
