It's tough when the sun is beating down and I worry about our lo's scalp burning (I mean, how do you put sunscreen on a scalp?) but we just go with it. My lo will normally wear a hat but there are times (usually when it's sunny and hot out) that she absolutely refuses. Sunscreen is the way to go then!

Oh man this is a new argument for us at 1, we never had an issue before. Sunscreen and persistence. LO will eventually give in.

He has hated hats since 16 months and he is 20 months now. Not sure why but even the chin strap ones end up on the floor immediately. It sucks

Mine hates hats, too. We haven't had much sun here in the PNW yet, but it's finally starting to warm up. I'm not sure yet what I'll do... I might end up having to bribe her or something :T

My son used to do the same, now he's back to being okay wearing a hat. What I noticed is that he loathes the chin straps, so if the hat doesn't have one, he's okay with it, but the moment you try to strap him into his hat, he revolts.

DS is 15m and rips all hats off. Even if it has a strap. He almost choked himself trying to remove it :-/

we have to use a strap on hat and then distract her, but then 5 min later she's trying to yank it off. She has super thin/light hair, so we will be plastering her with sunscreen if she won't wear them.

My kid went through a phase where he ripped all hats off his head immediately too. But my husband and I started wearing hats and telling him, Mommy and Daddy are wearing a hat so you need to wear a hat too. He seemed ok with wearing hats after that. There are also some hats that he prefers to wear over others. He hates anything that is tight on his head but he loves his fedora.

My son has always hated bucket hats but he wears baseball caps without issue. If he takes them off we just tell him that he has to keep his hat on and 90% of the time he listens. It also helps to show him how cool he looks in the mirror. He hates having the sun in his eyes and we tell him that wearing his hat protects his eyes so he readily complies (he's 2)!

L is 15 months, and doesn't like them either. We are putting them on her ALL the time - indoors, outdoors, in the car, getting ready for bed... we have hats *everywhere*. DH and I wear hats around the house too, so she thinks it's funny to wear hats now. After all this work on the stupid hats, she'll still only wear them for a minute or two, but if she's good and distracted outside, she might keep one on for 10-20 minutes. So, it's getting better!

I feel your pain. At about 10-months old she started ripping them off and I can't get her to keep one on for the life of me.

My LO likes regular hats but hates chin strap hats. I would just use a sun screen stick on ears, hair parts, etc.

Have you tried ones that you can tie below the chin? I have a lot of those because my LO otherwise doesn't keep them on.

I forgot how old your LO is though. When he is older choosing a hat together might work?

R isn't a fan either. So we try and distract her and sometimes it works. A strap on the hat helps.

But we just lather her head up. Just make sure to get the tops of his ears. My were burned, with blisters, as a kid, so I always make sure to do them.

We've been lucky so far, but C is learning how to pull things off her head, so I see this problem in our future too. She is very fair, so I am thinking it will be sunscreen plus hat with a neck strap to help hold it on a little longer.

This morning she was trying to pull the hood off, but she was pulling it forward the way she would pull a hat off. Sucker, hoods won't come off like that :)

My kid haaaates having anything on his head. If I try to put a hat on him he immediately rips it off. Is this a big deal in regards to sun safety? He is olive complected, so he doesn't burn easily.
