My mom makes it with it recently. DH and I hate it, but apparently my nephews love it. American cheese is really only good for burgers, etc. because it's had the oils removed to make it melt better. I also think using a mild cheddar will taste better than the American cheese. That said, you could check at the deli counter-- in the US they usually have it there if you can't find it with the other cheeses.
