@Pollywog: That's our plan too, for the same reason. DD is getting one gift from Santa this year, although she's still at the point where she doesn't really understand it anyway. My sister is the one who first made me think about it. I had never thought about how kids with less might feel terrible hearing that Santa brought other kids much more.

I grew up with everything was Santa. Hubby got some from Santa and some from his parents. We have decided one or two from us, and rest from Santa. Santa will get the things he asked for.

Since I'm Jewish (married to a non-Jew) I didn't have childhood experiences of Santa to draw from. My husband's gifts would all come from Santa, except for the ones from his aunts and uncle and grandparents. I agree that it's strange that family members would give gifts if all the gifts are supposed to come from Santa, so for now we've decided that all presents (for both Christmas and Chanukah) will come from mom and dad and family members and just the stockings will come from Santa.

Santa brings whatever she specifically asks for from him, plus the stocking. Everything else is from us and other family members.
Growing up though, everything under the tree was from Santa for both DH and I. So I'm not sure why we separate the gifts for our kids? Lol- it just happened somehow.

Santa bring the fantasy gift. I go with the view that Santa brings one thing and that's it, he has a lot of kids to think about. My son is accepting of that.

Santa fills the stockings and maybe one or two bigger items with the stocking. We are giving DS 2-3 presents from us. Nothing crazy big or expensive though since we are flying at Christmas this year.

All the adults in my family get stockings from Santa. This year DH and I decided not to exchange gifts just do stockings.

Santa brings the stuff mom would never agree to! ;)

Seriously, in my mind Santa brings stockings and one or two big things, but until this year, no one wAs really keeping score. This year I think my oldest is old enough to understand and ask who gave what, so we will need to all. E In the same page.

@Cole: growing up my parents always got the bowl of leftovers. They put candy, nuts, and fruit in our stockings, so any leftover candy/nuts/fruit/toothbrushes went into a bowl and that was considered my parents stockings.

Since it's just 3 of us right now, DH and I get stockings. I'm not sure if that will change or not in the future. Our animals also get stockings  I usually get little things we've both been eyeing but don't usually purchase for ourselves. For example, I got my DH smaller home brewing accessories and some video game memorabilia last year. I think I put some makeup and skin care items I wanted/needed and a fun coffee mug in mine. Plus candy! We don't really do gifts for each other but I love picking gifts out so stockings are a fun way for me to do it!

@Cole: we are not doing adult stockings. It gets tricky and expensive, and is just one more thing to figure out. And because I do most of the Christmas shopping, I'd either have to do my own stocking or be kind of let down...

We do a modest gift or two from Danta, plus a stocking. Everything else is from us. We chose to do it this way to help manage the entitlement attitude that can go along with Santa, and put more emphasis on graciousness. I agree with PPs who made the point about kids whose families can't afford much. We put presents under the tree all month and then on Christmas morning they wake up to the Santa gifts and stockings, too.

This is so fascinating to me! We're still trying to figure the whole Santa thing out as this year Ave next year we're not going to be home for actual Christmas morning so I'm not sure what to do. She definitely gets the whole Santa thing this year though so I think Santa will bring her two gifts this year and the rest will be from us.

I think stockings will be a mix of Santa and us, growing up it was always from Santa but my husband's family (like even the extended family) everyone contributes to each person's stocking they aren't a Santa thing so I think we'll meld the two or at least not make a hard and fast rule.

If stockings are from Santa at your house do adults get stockings too?

@sunnyday: Yes, to me that's the whole magic of Santa. No gifts under the tree (unless someone sends us something early) and then overnight Santa visits and leaves the gifts. I mean, if Santa's going to leave one gift, is that really a big deal for kids?

Its interesting to read all the different ways families do this.

Growing up all gifts were from Santa and they usually showed up overnight, but sometimes Santa came early while we were at church.

I think we will do most gifts from us - and they are accumulating under the tree now - and then one or two Santa gifts will show up Christmas morning. DS is 2 so he won't get it yet anyways.

lol this is so weird to read!!! So no gifts under the tree leading up to Christmas and suddenly everything shows up overnight?! What about gifts to others? So you in theory get your kids nothing for Christmas, but other family members (assuming) do? We do one big Santa gift and stockings, everything else from us.

So both DH & I grew up with almost everything being from
Santa and one or two from our parents. And that's how we have done it with our LOs so far...

BUT, a couple of days ago DS (4) and I were going through his toys to donate, and I was explaining to him that the toys were going to a family that the parents couldn't afford very many toys for their kids for Christmas. As I was saying it I realized that just didn't make much sense. If the majority of gifts come from Santa, why do the parents need to gift a lot too? He didn't ask, but I can totally see him connecting the dots next year. So I think we are going to flip it and have most of the gifts come from us. Also, it will lower the Santa expectations in the future!
