agree with others- doesn't sound like night terrors, but could be nightmares and/or teething. canines and molars are a total B. I would try pain meds to see if it helps(if you think she could be teething...) and nightlight.

I agree with Mrs. Blue and Mrs. High Heels - definitely not night terrors as you holding DD would actually make it worse. A night light might help and it should get better eventually.

Yea this sounds like nightmares bc with night terrors they aren't really awake. Exactly everything Mrs. Blue described! Leaving the door open and getting a night light really helped us when the nightmares and night terrors started getting worse for DD (this was after the 2 year mark though).

Yeah we've had this a few times too except A won't go back to sleep. I think it's either teething or nightmares but it'll pass!

C is only 12 months but we had really similar incidents this past week. We were traveling and staying in a rental house with family, so we were sharing a room with C and she was in her PnP, where she has slept plenty of times with no issue. All three nights she woke up a few hours after going to bed and just freaked out, crying hard, not even being calmed when I was holding her. She'd nurse but even that didn't totally calm her down. Eventually she would doze off in bed with us but couldn't really settle, but would cry when we got close to her PnP to put her back in there.

We were visiting family so there were a lot of people around and she was probably pretty overstimulated, wasn't napping well (thanks in part to certain family members who kept waking her up being loud idiots, but I digress). I figured it was a combo of overtired, overstimulated, and waking up in an unfamiliar place during the night, but it sounds so similar to what you are describing. The good news is we got home and she's been back to normal.

I'm thinking it might be a nightmare more than night terrors. When E has night terrors, he "wakes up" screaming like that, but he's not really awake. As in his eyes won't focus on us even when the light is on, we're talking to him, etc. He thrashes and screams like he's being tortured by every evil ever imagined. And then at some point, it finally ends and he actually wakes up out of it, but until he comes out of the terror on his own, nothing we do will get through to him. The fact that she fine when she's laying on you makes me think not a night terror.

E acts like what you described sometimes when he's teething, too.

This hasn't happened but M is having a difficult time with daycare drop off this past week when previously she loved getting there! I think it's separation anxiety so perhaps it's normal for their age?

My LO did the same thing at around the same age. I chalked it up to separation anxiety &/or nightmares &/or teething pain (molars, canines). It took about a week and stopped. I just would go in and hold her.. It was an exhausting week.

Poor E :(

We don't use a nightlight, but our white noise machine has a projector on it that puts out some light with some animals on it...Dh said she wanted nothing to do with it.

Weirdly enough, the door was open last night and there was light coming in, but then she got up and shut it and then freaked out when it was pitch black. So I'll try one.

My LO does this too (14 months) but much more frequently. She wakes consistently at night anyways though, but not always with an episode like this. Maybe nightmares? Do you use a night light? I was thinking about trying one.

We had the weirdest night and this is the second time in a month it's happened. She's 16 months old.

In the middle of the night, E wakes up screaming, absolutely hysterical. Like a scared/hurt sounding cry and is trying to climb out of the crib. I go in there and all she wants is to be held. And she clings to me like a baby monkey or something. She's fine if she's laying on me or with me but as soon as I set her down or walk away, she starts sobbing uncontrollably and freaking out again. And usually I can go in, rub her back, and walk out and she's fine. I rarely have to go in there. But both nights, DH has ended up falling asleep on the floor next to her and then transferring her. She wanted nothing to do with her crib, but won't sleep in bed with us, either (she either wants to play or just tosses around so much and doesn't fall asleep). She goes to sleep just fine, no problems, just wakes up freaking out.

Is this night terrors? A separation anxiety thing? I'm so perplexed and I wrote the first one off, but now it's happened a second time....
