Looks like my son's umbilical granuloma. Was quickly treated with silver nitrate and went away after two treatments.

My sister had something like this ... They called it a herniated belly button, and it was treated by these sticks (that looked like matches). Sorry I don have more details!! But, her belly button is totally normal now!!

Thank you ladies! This makes me feel better. There haven't been any signs of infection (it looks red in the picture, but is more flesh colored). I will continue to monitor it though. Glad it most likely is something minor!

Belly buttons ARE weird!

There could be residual cystic or duct tissue. I'd no itir closely for signs and symptoms of infection and go I. If you see anything red, hot, foul smelling or pus-like.

Belly buttons are weird, aren't they?!

A had this too. I thought it was a hernia, but my ped just said it was the end of the cord and it would go away. Now at 4 months he looks normal.

Likely a granuloma, which is not a big deal. It can be some pretty funky stuff though. (Not scary, but funky. Like a bit of embryonic tissue in the wrong place at the wrong time and becomes a little nothing-burger polyp.) I'm 98% sure it doesn't look like anything I'd worry about, but hard to tell through a hard computer screen. :) I think you are okay to wait unless it gets hard and painful of if you see pus or green, smelly drainage. As always, call your pedi if you are the slightest bit concerned no matter what I say. (I am not a pediatrician, nor pretend to be! I do know a few things about the belly button though.)

@rahlyrah: A had the same thing, I can't remember the medical term. Her pediatrician said she needed to see a surgeon for it. We made the appointment but within a few weeks it cleared up on it's own. I hope this is the case for you too!

ETA: I think she mentioned the word polyp. And yes it will be ok to wait until the next appt!

I noticed LO's belly button looked odd after his cord fell off. I'd never seen (well, paid attention to) a newborn's belly button prior to having my son. It looked weird, but I assumed it was normal. I just thought he had an outie.

As time has passed, my instincts started telling me that maybe it wasn't normal. I researched it and decided that it could be an umbilical hernia. Everything I read said they are fairly common and often resolve themselves so I didn't worry.

This week, I noticed a slight drainage that has me concerned. It doesn't bother him at all to touch it, and it's not hard, so that makes me feel a little better.

My mom (a nurse) checked it out and has no idea as to what it could be. She said she thinks it's ok to wait until his 2 month checkup on Friday to get it checked out; I'm still worried though.

Has anyone seen anything like this? Please excuse the blurry pic, I couldn't keep him still enough to take a good one.
