Update: So yesterday DD was seeming remarkably better with much less congestion. DH still insisted that we should put her to bed later so she may sleep in later - he ignored me when I told him thats just not how it works.

We put her down at 8pm (normal is 7pm), at midnight she was up and crying (almost screaming) - DH went in a told her it was nigh nigh and she'd have to lay down and go to sleep. He left while she was still standing/crying. She cried for 10 mins and then laid down and went to sleep. She was up again at 4am crying, I turned the monitor down (so DH would not be disturbed) and let her CIO. She cried for maybe 5-10 minutes that laid down. She slept until 6:20...but what was nice was it wasnt immediate crying - so I could wrap up getting ready myself.

Much better night...so glad we were able to let her CIO successfully so that I can somewhat stop panicking about undoing the good we had built up!

DD went thru the 2 year regression and it was brutal. 2 year molars still have not some in so it wasn't that. We still have some issues and she will be 3 in Dec. She went from going down between 7-8 like a champ, to crying and screaming. It would take over an hour or more for her to fall asleep. She would cry until she puked. She would wake up crying 1-5 times a night. I would need to stay until she fell asleep. Rinse and repeat. She is a lot better now going to sleep, but we still have at least 1-2 night a week with 1 or more wake ups, crying etc. I think their imagination really gets going at this age and it is hard for them with nightmares, bad dreams and such.

@erinbaderin: I figured it could be a 2 year regression...thats why I tried to tell DH to let her CIO. He was against that in her current condition. As soon as she is well or on the mend I will be enforcing this. I am encouraged by the fact that she went to sleep so well last night - so fingers crossed we'll get over the hump without much damage.

"All done nigh nigh" was down right funny at 8pm the one night - I had to hold in a chuckle. And I'll admit it broke my heart at 3am to leave her room while she cried "all done nigh nigh mama" - but I had to hold strong...so I sent DH in instead! ;)

There's a 2 year sleep regression - maybe that's what's happening? But a warning that you CAN undo all your work in a short while trying to just get through something. B went through a sleep regression at 17 months and we thought "Let's just get do what we have to do to get through this". 2 months later he still needed 45 minutes of cuddling to go to sleep and was up 2-3 times a night and we had to do sleep training all over again.

On a side note, "All done nigh nigh" is pretty cute - probably not for you at 3am, but from an outside perspective, I want to give her a squeeze.

My 20 month old is doing the same. It's a mix of 2 year molars starting to come in and I think separation anxiety. There have been a few nights I've just laid down beside his crib until he falls asleep. It just started to get better 2 nights ago, so hang in there!

This sounds a little like DD. She's 2 in a couple of weeks, so maybe it's the age? She's fine at bedtime but has been waking at 5am recently (normal wake up is 730-8) and crying a little. We weren't worried about letting her CIO as she wasn't ill and we didn't feel like there was anything else going on and she still wakes sometimes but goes right back to sleep. One thing I did think might be causing it is that it's been a little colder here recently so last night I put her in warmer clothing for bed and she slept right through til we woke her at 730. Could be a coincidence, I don't know!

I would do what you need to do whilst she's not 100% and then maybe CIO.

@catomd00: I dont have unreasonable expectations from her....what has really thrown me is this hysterical crying/hyperventilating she has started that I had never seen before. I agree - we do what we have to to get by...and that is especially true now being 3 mos pregnant and sleeping horribly to start with...

I just worry about bringing undoing 2 years of work...to make it through a couple weeks...but your right it is what it is...

@2PeasinaPod: So that was my first thought...that it was second year molars coming in. I inspected her mouth and dont see that they are puffy (certainly not as puffy as her 1st year ones were when they came in). Unfortunately when I ask her she tends to just say yes to everything...so who knows!!!

I don't think you can reasonably expect anyone of any age to always sleep soundly every night. As long as there is no medical reason for waking her, unless she can tell you what's going on its fruitless to try to figure out the why. I'd chalk it up to a phase that will pass and just do what you gotta do to get the most sleep. I think it's kid dependent if they develop a "bad habit". I have done all the "no-no's" to get me through phases that sometimes last months and we have had no issue going back to the regular routine when whatever phase passed.

@Mrs D: Does she have all of her teeth yet? That was a huge time period where DS wasn't himself sleeping. He would do a lot of the similar things that you're describing above. As soon as a tooth popped, he was back to his normal self. I would ask him periodically if his teeth or mouth hurt, but he didn't quite understand what I was asking. The canines were the worst!

DS went/is going through this! Right before he turned 2, he was waking up like a newborn baby, every other hour or even sooner asking for milk (we all know you don't need milk especially 5x a night at 2!!). For about a month, all he wanted was to be picked up. Nothing else soothed him. It was a nightmare!!

Just the other night, he was sleeping significantly better and only had a couple wake ups, but were brief and he went back to sleep. Thank you lord!!! It was glorious. I'm guessing it's a growth/milestone spurt because he's having a word explosion now. I'm hoping his sleeping habits continue to improve and we're back to STTN really, really soon. Like starting tonight would be fabulous!! He only started doing so at 18 months so we're desperate.

Hoping this phase passes quickly for you!!

We had a phase pretty much exactly like this around her just turning 2, followed by her sleeping a glorious 13 hours a night + a 3 hour nap, then just back to normal. So my vote is phase!

I need the Hives help!

Background: I have been spoiled with DD's sleep. From Day 1 I tried hard to get her good at putting her self to sleep and back to sleep. Minus a few hiccups (which I think are normal growth/development stages) she has STTN since about 6 mos old. I always lay her down grogy and she falls asleep on her own. Sometimes she lays in her crib for 30-60 mins just doing whatever and sometimes she chills out in the AM before waking me.

Now: She will be 2 on Saturday. Her usual (since say 9ish months) routine is sleeping 7pm - anywhere between 6 & 7am. Usually 6:30am. Its great. Around 6:30 we usually stop "playing" and start winding down - which does often include a show/movie. At 6:45ish we go upstairs - diaper, clean up, jammies, bottle, book - then to bed. (Side Note: I know I need to drop the bottle and switch to a sippy of milk - its on the list).

Recently: Starting this weekend a couple nights in a row she was waking early (like 3am/4am) crying and when I'd go in she'd say "all done nigh nigh". I'd tell her "no - its still nigh nigh, please lay down and I'll tuck you in". Over the weekend she agreed but would wake constantly after that (like every hour). Then I noticed Sunday she was getting congested - I'm thinking maybe allergies. No fever, appetite has been fine. Sleep at Daycare has been fine. Tuesday night was a MESS. 7pm-9pm a mixture of screaming hysterically, thrusting herself around her crib, hyperventilating and just generally acting like a demon. We could not get her to go to sleep. Finally I set up the pack n play in our room and she laid down after 10 mins of crying in it. Slept from 9-6am. Last night, after some suggestions from friends, I tried giving her benadryl for the congestion. She went to sleep on her normal routine (in her crib) and slept 7pm-5am. At 5am, she refused to go back to bed and insisted "all done nigh nigh".

So - I am wondering, do you all think this is a growth spurt/development phase she will break out of? Is it related to her cold/allergies? DH will not do a cry it out method while she is under the weather - so I am terrified of creating a bad habit as we go through this transition.

Thoughts?
