I'd just like to say that I would be happy to be an au pair for any of you going on exotic vacations with your LOs. You don't even have to pay me - just buy my flight & hotel room. :)

We took DS to Portugal when he was about 15 months. Granted, we were already living in France so it was less than 2 hours by plane. But it was a great mix of cities (Porto and Lisbon) and country side (Douro Valley) and you could even do the beach. You could probably find a direct flight from Atlanta to Lisbon.

@Lozza: this is a total creeper/side note but when I was TTC and pg I followed your blog religiously and never knew this was you!

Back to the topic at hand: we aren't doing any big traveling, I'm a scaredy cat. We are hoping to take a trip to Santa Barbara next summer, my grandma has a home there so we will have a kitchen, laundry, etc.

We were in Nice, France a couple of years ago and there were tons of young families around...we didn't have kids at the time so I don't have any great insight as to child- stroller-friendly activities to do there.

@irene: We stayed at a hotel since my BIL's place was way too small to host us. If we went again, I would probably try and rent an apartment, since this would have given us much more freedom when it came to food. DD would wake up at 11 pm and want to eat lunch, due to jet lag. We ended up having to save leftovers from dinner (which she tantrumed through) and feed those to her, but of course there was no microwave...

Dim sum available all day long, copious food courts, 7-11's that sell hot foods, that is pretty kid friendly in my opinion! :-)

There were suprisingly always high chair everywhere we went, and changing table. Also, many of the shopping plazas (seems like that is all there is to do in HK) have a floor devoted to kids stores, and there is always a family restroom there. We didn't venture too much off the beaten path and stayed mainly in Causeway Bay and Lantau Island (where family is).

HK Disney, Macau, those are all places you can easily go that may also be of interest!

Singapore was also a really good destination to take DD, but it is so small, you may not really consider that a true vacation. We did that as an extended layover on a trip to SE Asia and it was fun.

@irene: my LO is 3 months and his passport has just come so we haven't traveled internationally yet. We are headed to London next month but I'm guessing you have already "been there done that". We had actually considered stopping in Iceland since it was cheap but ultimately decided against it.

I've been to Peru three times pre baby and like @MediaNaranja: said, Latin America is very baby friendly. Rural Peru has lots of sites to see and lots of local children and animals to play with.
When I went to Puerto Rico we stayed at a resort by the beach, but rented a car to see the sites and explore the rainforest.

I think in any Latin American destination you would need to baby wear and either skip the stroller or use an all terrain stroller.

@Trailmix: @wheres_c: @irene: I was also going to suggest latin america. I know that there are direct flights from atlanta to lots of latin american cities. I havent personally been with a child but they LOVE babies and small children there. I know that Ecuador is only a 7 hour flight or so, or Buenos Aires could be fun, too!

@Trailmix: We are trying to stay away from beaches, because that would be too easy. LOL

@T-Mom: kudos to you! That is our to-do list too as we have to go visit family as well. I've been kinda worried about it because growing up there, I don't think they have good amenities (eg. high chair, changing stations) everywhere like we do here in the US.... not to mention I am not sure if they have kid-friendly food if we just go out to a restaurant! (For now, I give LO some of whatever I eat from my plate). I just can not remember if people ever really bring small children (younger than 2) out to a restaurant to eat. I also heard from a relative that her child got food poisoning while in Hong Kong. Sigh.

What was your experience? Did you stay at a hotel (or service apartment) or at family/friends' homes? Did you mostly eat out or eat at home with your family? Did you have problem finding changing stations? So many questions! :)

@MungBean: Would love to Korea !!! But we have to pass the Hong Kong hurdle first. Then after hearing all the horror stories with cruises these past months I think we are going to steer clear from cruises for a while.... but that would have been a wonderful idea.

@wheres_c: Have you actually been to Peru/Costa Rica / Puerto Rico with you LO? Of course that's wonderful, just that I am not sure how the experience would be hauling/carrying a possibly over-tired cranky tantrum-throwing child during the course. I'd love to hear your experience!

I actually thought about Puerto Rico -- just want to get some advice from someone who actually has been there while carrying a child !! :)

Peru is great....walking around all the ruins or going to the jungle. I think Costa Rica or Puerto Rico would be good.....rainforest and all.
Mexico Beaches are nice, as are the Bahamas.

I took my 9 month old to Korea and we had a blast. I imagine it would be even more fun w a 1.5 yr old. We are taking LO on a cruise in a couple months (she will be approx 15 months) - don't know if you'd be interested in something like that.

We traveled to HK when DD was 20 months. The jet lag was horrible. She had night terrors on the plane and threw tantrums during meal times (since it was sleeping time according to U.S. time). After about 4 days she snapped out of it, and we felt really bad about it, but it was hard since we were there to visit family. In general, I think HK is a great place for kids. The food is pretty kid friendly and there were many more family restrooms than in the US.

Our next international destinations on the wishlist with young kids are mainly places we have been before as a couple and want to visit again - Japan, France, maybe Bali.

@Lozza: This is awesome! Thanks! I will share it with DH....
We went to Sydney, Australia too when LO was 5 months, but that was more of a leisure trip cuz DH was working and I took LO to visit a friend who just had a baby the exact same age as LO most of the days. That was a nice trip for me but not for DH. It's more scary because now I can no longer shove my boobs into his mouth when he cries on the plane.... not to mention LO doesn't sit still and he could throw tantrums.

I do know DH wanted / longed / craved for a trip that is shown in that blog link you sent me....

Suggestions please!

We used to make 3 big trips a year before baby (europe, asia...etc) ... Last year we made 3 too but 1 was for business for DH, 1 was to the grannies, and the last one was to Carribbean for a long weekend. So no real vacay at all other than the last one.

We are dying to get out for a trip. LO just turned 1. We are thinking about iceland because there is nothing much to do other than strolling around (no crazy walking/touring the cities, and no tight schedules). Another thing nice about it is it probably doesn't get dark until really late, so we may not even need to adjust LO's clock! However, the draw back is we will be flying from Atlanta, and there is no direct flight to iceland. With a whiny 1.5 year old it is best to stick with trips with 1 leg of flight, if possible.

We are trying to avoid a beach vacation too. Any suggestions on the best vacation destination with a 1.5 year old child? Anywhere that you had good experience with?
