@tequiero21: if you are in NY, check out http://www.choicesinchildbirth.org/

there's a childbirth guide that has useful birth information and C/S rates for NY hospitals (page 15), but the data is from 2000 & 2008... still a good guide to read though. There's also a national guide & Philly guide. All the guides are on the right-hand column of the homepage.

According to this source, my hospitals' 2008 C/S rates were 31.7% (DD#1, 2008 baby) and 40.7% (!!!) (DD#2, 2011 baby). So yes, we beat the odds both times and are very grateful for our experiences.

The CS rate where I went was 26.5% and I didnt have a CS. The hospital is trying to become like a birthing center and its made great strides from what I hear it used to be but it still has a bit more to go.

The hospital that I work at and will deliver at has a 19% c-section rate. That is not a risk-adjusted rate, just the straight stats (number of c-sections divided by number of births).

@daniellemybelle: That's definitely not surprising. Obgyns are just trained differently than midwives.

I had an Obgyn with DS and decided after my experience I didn't want an ob again. I have a midwife this time and she's AWESOME! She's only had to transfer one laboring mom to the hospital for a section in the last 2 1/2 years of her practice where she's located. (she's been in midwifery much longer but she moved to where she is now just 2 1/2 years ago)

So excited about getting to birth at home instead of the hospital.... I know that IF I needed to be transferred, it's b/c I really needed it, and not like last time b/c I was "taking to long"

@runsyellowlites @mrbee Thanks for pointing that out! Just out of curiosity, I looked up the C section rate for Vanderbilt Hospital, which is where I'd likely have our first child if everything lines up how I'd like. In 2008 (a while ago I know) it was 31%! Not sure if that's adjusted or not. But then I found something on a Babycenter thread saying the rate for the midwife practice was 16% in 2010... interesting!

@daniellemybelle: My understanding is that for the state of Texas, all that is required for public reporting are c-sections done to low risk moms, they do not have to disclose their FULL rates... thus the "risk-adjusted" rates

For a "good" rate WHO looks for overall cesarean rates to be under 15% for industrialized countries... So I would personally look for something here in the states ATLEAST under 20%, especially when many midwifery practices are looking more around 10% and under. =)

My hospital is on the higher end probably but that's because our area's high risk doctors deliver there. I knew starting at week 16 that I'd never be able to have anything but a c-section.

Side note: What is a "good" C-section rate? I've heard it depends on what type of hospital it is. If they handle lots of high risk patients, obviously it is going to be higher.

This is interesting. But I have no clue what the rate is at the hospital I gave birth at. I had a vaginal birth, my sister a C-section (because the baby wasn't placed properly)

Both me and my younger sister were both there, Hubs too and all vaginally.... so the C-section rate in our family is REALLY LOW :)

But they labor ward at my hospital is called the birthing center and they claim to be very open to vaginal births and moms in labor are allowed to walk around, shower.. etc and arent restricted to lay on their backs on the bed

Our hospital (Sutter in CA) is pretty wholistic when it comes to treatment and has a super low c-section rate of 9% and an episiotomy rate of 1%. It has a team of midwives on staff and is the only hospital in our region with water birthing tubs.

That said, I helped contribute to that 9% with my c-section, lol.

The hospital I delivered at is actually on the low end at about 19% (which I was part of making)

Where I live now, both hospitals are right about 25%.... 1 in 4 is still to high in my book!

note: both these rates are considered "risk adjusted" so it doesn't include high risk.... just the normal low risk momma going in for delivery.

I had a c-sec at Lenox Hill in NYC and they told me theirs was about 40%, and some high percentage of those were elective...I added to that

ETA - there are a few different lists on there. I know Lenox Hills percentages are high regardless, but I didnt care. I wanted a csec so that was a nonissue. I can tell you that the hospital with the lowest rate almost killed me lol. Not for childbirth though =o)

According to this link, the following hospitals have the highest primary cesarean rates are:

1. Lawrence Hospital Center (40.3 percent)
2. Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center (38.6 percent)
3. St. Anthony Community Hospital (38.6 percent)
4. St. Catherine of Siena Hospital (37.5 percent)
5. Sound Shore Medical Center of Westchester (37.4 percent)
6. Westchester Medical Center (35.5 percent)
7. St. John’s Riverside Hospital - St. John’s Division (35.3 percent)
8. New York Presbyterian - New York Weill Cornell Center (34.8 percent)
9. Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center (34.6 percent)
10. St. Charles Hospital (34.5 percent)

http://www.citizen.org/Page.aspx?pid=3231

Our hospital was #8 at 34.8 percent! Bee had two babies there: a c-section and a VBAC. So I guess our family c-section rate at that hospital was 50%... so we'll have to have another baby. Hopefully it will be another VBAC so we can get our family c-section rate down to 33%! (Just kidding, as you can see by mousing over my avatar... this family's baby factory is closed!)

Anyway, do you know the c-section rate of your hospital or birthing center? Did you beat the odds or not?
