@mediagirl: exactly. We considered a nanny before but it was for our own convenience. Now I am considering because I just wonder how T will do in a daycare setting. He is a picky eater, likes his swing and other toys etc. So we are exploring a nanny again.

@winniebee: seriously. I just saw an email from a group this morning that talked about the same thing. When baby is still inside, everything looks great. Once baby is here, your ideas change.

@Andrea thanks. :-) It's hard to imagine any one watching her but me but I know we have to do it. Boooo.

7-2 by law, but usually 3-1 in our center.

The closer I get to going back to work, the more we are seriously considering a nanny. It's almost 1K more a month, but I think it might be worth it.

Ours is 4:1 which is better than the state law mandate of 5:1. It is interesting to see on here the variety in state standards! So relatively we are happy with the ratio. LO gets lots of attention since a few of the kids are almost always napping, plus not all the kids are there the full time.

Another thing to consider is the total number of kids in the room. Ours is no more than 8 with 2 teachers, which I prefer to the idea of 12 babies and 3 teachers.

In our state in home is 6:1 so I am happy with our center.

Texas is 4:1 or 10:2. The teachers at our present daycare complain that 10 is too many. The teachers prefer to stay at a 8 or less:2 ratio. Unfortunately, the goal of the daycare seems to maximize revenues and not keep parents or staff happy.

(tomorrow is our last day at this daycare!)

I think home daycares can have higher ratios (but maybe you're looking into a nanny share or some other alternate home care)? It is 3:1 for infants at our daycare which was more than sufficient, I think.

I looked at going into home care in California. What I learned was:

If all you have is infants (defined as under 2 years old) you can have up to 4 infants per caregiver.

If you have any infants and up to 2 infants you can only have 6 kids total.

If you have no infants (all over age 2) you can have up to 8 kids.

If all parents agree, you can take on one school aged short care above those limits (for example your 7 year old who is there during breaks and after school).

A SAHM friend is watching my son and at most it is 3 to 1 (my son, her son who is 4, and her nephew who is 5).

The infant room at my daycare is 1:2, 1:4 for 1-2.5 but its usually 2 teachers for about 6 kids, and in 2.5-4yrs its 2 teachers for 9-10 kids and 4-5 its 2 teachers for 10 students and they have 3 floaters throughout the day to help out.

Our day care has 8 kids to 3 adults. They are split between two rooms with 4 kids in each room. 1 teacher stays in each room full time and then the 3rd teach floats between the two rooms.
