I have no idea...we're at a brand new school that's currently being built and the teachers have just been hired, so I assume they'll do something on the first few days of school.

I think an assessment makes sense, but I am similarly concerned for my son. It's a totally new environment, a longer day, kids he doesn't know, etc. I can see it being stressful for the entire family.

LO is going to a local Charter school in the fall. He will have a 20 minute assessment in June to figure out his skill level. The goal in Kindergarten is to make sure it's a mixed group of kids. That will change as they get older. School starts on a Thursday. On Wednesday we will go in with him to meet his teachers with fellow parents and students.

wow - that's intense. I agree with you. I understand the need for assessment but that should be done prior to the start of the school year.

At ours the first day after labor day is a supply drop off and meet the teacher, see your child's room (same as ^ after that drop off/pick up happens out side of the school), etc. Then day 2 is half day ( I believe) then after that it's full days from there.

ETA: In August there is a meet the teachers/parents event held on the lawn outside of school

There is a K orientation in April or May that all kids go too - they tell you there isn't any testing BUT DH had to go with DS and they did kind of test them - writing letters, numbers, rhyming, colors, etc. So nothing huge but they wanted an idea of where they were.

The first 2 months of K are all about getting a feel for where kids fall - after that they are split into groups based on ability and the kids that need extra help are moved to the 1 all day class they offer.

Ok back to your question.

K starts on Wed - you drop off outside the building - you are not allowed to walk your kid in. Its the same as 1st-6th. That's it - just a regular school day

Last night I was at an even with a bunch of moms. One of the moms was telling me about her son's first day of Kindergarten last year. Apparently in our county, kids go to school on Monday, Tuesday OR Wednesday (sorted by last name) and their first day is a day of testing. Then they go back Friday with the parents to meet their teacher. The testing is so they can mix kids based on their skill levels in the classes. Monday starts full normal days of school.

While I get the reasoning behind the testing, the idea of sending my already sensitive kid into school to be tested on her first exciting day of Kindergarten is BS. Maybe Mrs. Lion can contribute here - she's an educator in the same county.

How does Kindergarten start in your district? Does your kid have to go to a day of testing before starting K?
