@tequiero21: it was approx two hours long. Clean up took an addtl thirty minutes. Any longer and lo would have had a complete meltdown (she was super cranky that day).

@chopsuey119: haha I do it want a service either. But my mom was appalled I didn't want one. I just want a short message and prayer. Like 2 min short. I'm an ek and come from a family of pastors.

@mungbean: how long was your dohl?

@tequiero21: I can't believe your kids are almost 1!!!!!
Is it terrible that I really don't like when they have services at parties? HAHA. I'm a PK too.
At DD's 1st DH prayed and we chowed down. :)

Debating where we're going to have DS' 1st. If we're in CA I'm sure my parents will want to do a short message. Gonna try to talk them out of it though! lol.

But yeah. Service first. Then eat. Then cake and activities!
Hope it goes well :D

@tequiero21: I would say right before the meal or the cake, when you have everyone there and paying attention!

We had my daughter's dohl at a Chinese restaurant. We started off by having our pastor say a prayer for us (no service) and then served the meal. After everyone was done eating, we changed LO into her hanbok and did the dohljabi. Then we sang happy birthday and cut the cake, did the dohljabi raffle, and directed everyone to the dessert/favor table so they could take candy, cookies, and dduk.

@tequiero21: i'd probably do the short service right before the cake, since that's when everyone's gathered around and you have their attention

At my friend's son's first bday party, she just had a time of free-mingle and playing for the kids, while people ate (snacked, not a full meal), then did cake with the baby, opened presents and handed out favors for the kids.

@T.H.O.U.: nope, like the pastor saying a short message and prayer and my great uncle saying a blessing prayer....

Thx, ladies! So nervous, I hate throwing parties and it's at the end of the month.

I'm not sure what you mean by short service? Like thanking the guests?

We did a lunch party so we had food ready and coming off the grill as guests arrived. Everyone mingled for a bit and then grabbed a plate to eat. I think we played a quick game with the kids when they were done and let them color.

After that we did a quick "Thank you" to the guests and then lit the candle to sing happy birthday. After people got cupcakes we opened presents. After presents we played one more game and then the kids played some more.

I don't know about the service but I can tell you the flow of my nephew's first birthday since LO is only 7 months. His party was about 2 hours. Everyone arrived and mingled and the kids played while they made the food. Then we all ate. After that, I believe my nephew opened presents to give everyone time to get hungry again for cake. Then he did his cake smash and everyone else ate cake. After that he had to have a bath and most people started heading home.

If you throw parties, what is the flow of events? Particularly first bday parties? Also, if you want to do a short service, where is that incorporated - in the beginning?
