I just flew internationally at 28 weeks. On another note, I find it a bit crazy that she's wanting you to work around a *possible* pregnancy/newborn. Good grief!

I flew at 30 weeks with my first and it was very tiring but fine. Doing a calm beach vacation would have been great. The midwife said I could fly as late as the airlines would allow or up to 36 weeks.

With my second I would have been pretty uncomfortable by that point. From a health perspective it would have been fine but I was just so sore and achy already.

That said I wouldn't put off a whole family vacation on the chance of getting pregnant.

@misolee: I understand this as well. Actually this sister had fertility issue with her first (4 MC, conceived through IUI) but her second was conceived naturally very quickly. So who knows what #3 will bring (and do be honest her husband still isn't 100% on board with a 3rd in the comments he makes!)

I will say that as someone who does get pregnant right away (my first was our first time trying, and my second was our second month) I might be guilty of this, although I would never say it out loud to others, just to DH like "we shouldn't plan that trip with them if we are going to start trying in XYZ I could be 8 month pregnant"

@misolee: Me too - I had that friend, who then DID get pregnant her first try AND is convinced she successfully used Shettles to pick the gender. Still annoys me :-/ Maybe because I got pregnant the same week she did and lost it. Ah well. /threadjack

I flew domestically at 32 weeks and felt good. There's so many variables with TTC and pregnancy she really can't plan around the potential conflicts, so I agree with others that starting to plan and having contingency to get out with no/minimal financial impact to her is the best option.

I flew at 35 weeks last time and will fly at 36 weeks this time. I think traveling at 6-7 months as long as it's a low risk pregnancy is no big deal. And it's really hard to plan a vacation around a yet-to-be pregnancy because so many things could happen. You can't put your life on hold (or expect others to) when you start TTC. I would be annoyed as well.

Kind of off topic but I get annoyed by people who talk like they can get pregnant when they want to. I know it's possible and doable to get pregnant on the month and time they would want to, but it just irks me. Maybe bc I went through a miscarriage and then secondary infertility but there are so many factors! I used to have a coworker who would say things like..."since I'll be pregnant in two months, I can't really do this activity" or "argh. I'll be pregnant when I'm at the beach this summer." Even when she's not pregnant yet

@ElbieKay: @Jess1483: @DesertDreams88: Well I guess my mom booked us cabins instead of a nice beach vacation. I'm not much of a lake/cabining person like the rest of my family...this was not what I had in mind for our big family vacation. I'm disappointed to say the least.

My ob didn't want my flying anywhere after 32 weeks pregnant, and I would've been miserable because I was really big by that time, couldn't bend over or lift anything, had to pee all the time, not sleeping well, etc. I flew at 26-27 weeks and I think 30 would be my personal limit.

That being said, it sounds like at most she'd be 6-7 months pregnant, which is within that timeframe. So I think she should be willing to plan the trip.

Southwest is really flexible with refunds. You get dollar-for-dollar southwest credit good for 365 days after the intended flight.

I made a short 1 hour flight at 35 weeks pregnant. I also did a cross country all day flight with multiple connections at 33 weeks pregnant. It was AWFUL. I should have worn compression stockings because the flights caused my legs to swell horribly, and I was shocked by the amount of people who never gave their seat up to me in a crowded airport or didn't even help get my luggage down from the overhead. I was absolutely huge too!

I flew to Vegas on July 4th at 35 weeks! I was comfortable and didn't have any complications. My OB was totally fine with my flying/traveling since medical care was easily accessible. She probably wouldn't approve if I was flying to a remote location where the nearest medical care was 2 hours by flight.

28 weeks. When I flew (outbound) at 26 weeks it was no problem (except discomfort, of course). Definitely harder on me at 28 weeks, but I developed pre-e 8 weeks later (with symptoms starting about 32 weeks), so I'm not the best example. However, I guess it might be smart to consider the effect of a high-risk pregnancy anyway?

I think travel up to 32 weeks should be fine in most cases.

Why don't you just plan it and let her wait to book her flight when she's comfortable going? Most hotel reservations are refundable.

There is the possibility of traveling when pregnant, and then there is the question of enjoying yourself. I would personally try to avoid spending hard-won vacation time and money during a first or third trimester.
