@Weagle: yes to all those...you're right, I kno! The pedi isn't even really concerned...I guess it's just my worry du jour (there always has to be one, right?!).

@hilsy85: Try not to worry about it unless he pediatrician tells you there's a reason to do so. Is he happy? Healthy? Eating? Playing? There's no good in worrying about a problem that doesn't exist. Babies come in all shapes and sizes, just like grown-ups :)

We just got the go-ahead at LO's 6 month checkup to start solids! So far we've only introduced mashed avocado, which she loves.

Did you introduce foods and wait the 3-4 days to add a new food to verify there was no reaction? I'm having a hard time timing the introduction of new food, because I'd like to be there, but that would mean waiting until the weekend, since I"m nervous about introducing something new in the evening if she has a reaction to it overnight. But at this rate, she will only have 3 new foods within the month!! I need to find a better process..

@Weagle: that's the thing--if he were small all over, like petite, I wouldn't worry. But he's tall, so I feel like maybe he's not proportionate? But then, if he's tall it means he is growing in one direction! So who knows :)

DD is 7 months old, and has 2-3 meals a day depending on how hungry she seems. I always breastfeed her first, and give her up to an hour or so before offering solids. I do not weight her solids, just judge by how hungry she seems or by how much she has eaten that day.

For breakfast she will have fruit mixed with some rice cereal- be it apples, pears or a banana.

Then for lunch she will have some avocado, the other half of her banana or lately she has been munching on some little bits of bread. Lunch isn't usually very big at all.

Dinner is a mix of brown rice and veggies, lately she has been having chicken too.

Being that she is BF and never from a bottle I have zero idea how much she actually drinks, and I never weigh her food- just follow her cues. When she was EBF prior to the introduction of solids at 6months, she was in the 75 percentile. But as DS Did too, at 6 months their weight gain slowed right down. DS went from the 75 percentile to the 25 percentile in a matter of a couple of months and now is back to the 50th percentile. I can see DD is following the same pattern. As long as they're gaining weight and I am following their cues I don't pay too much attention.

@hilsy85: Probably around 2-3 oz!

It's generally around this now..

7am wakeup, bottle, 6-7 oz usually
930ish 2-3 oz fruit/fruit mixed w/ cereal, 1-2 oz formula (whatever she'll take)
12-1 5-6 oz formula
3-4 5-6 oz formula
dinner time- 2-3 oz vegetables
bedtime 2-7 oz formula

It's sort of variable depending on how much she's eaten throughout the day...but generally I'd say she's on the lower end of what I've listed above. It worries me because she used to drink about 30 oz/day.

@hilsy85: LO was 16 lb 8 oz at 9 months and 12 days old. Our pedi is not concerned. I'm small, small babies are the norm in our family, she eats, and she's super active. It is strange (most of our baby friends that are several months younger have definitely surpassed her in size), as she keeps getting taller but not gaining much weight :)

LO is about 9.5 months old and has pretty much weaned herself off purees. She wants real food and we follow the "she'll let us know when she's done" technique and sometimes we're amazed at how much she can eat!

A typical day is like this:

5:30am 8 oz bottle
8:30am breakfast, usually a fruit puree and oatmeal. 4 oz bottle offered.
12:30pm lunch, typically a veggie, fruit and protein. 4 oz bottle offered. Today it is broccoli, papaya, and chicken. This is all diced into small pieces, but fresh fruit/veggies and a proten that I cook. If I don't have my act together, we may substitute a yogurt.
4:00pm - 8oz bottle (doesn't always finish)
6:00pm - dinner which consists of veggie, fruit and protein. Sometimes we will add a starch like rice or pasta. 6oz bottle offered.

We've done scrambled eggs, cheese, yogurt, pork tenderloin, chicken, and ground beef for proteins and LO really likes all of these. Last night we let her feed herself her brocooli, fruit and cheese and then while we were eating she wanted more so we fed her some chicken. This kid was screaming for more chicken. We got such a kick out of it. Sometimes we'll feed her tiny pieces and sometimes we'll let her feed herself which she loves to do, but ends up eating less and wearing more of it. We took her out to lunch last week at chinese restaurant and ordered steamed broccoli and I have her some white rice from my dish, and she gobbled it up. I know she's getting plenty of nutrients from her bottles (which are always offered and it varies how much she drinks) so I focus more on introducing her to different foods and flavors, and a variety of healthy stuff. LO is a great eater, although there have been some things she doesn't like such as avocado and cottage cheese.

@hilsy85: I really didn't do amounts of solid food. For purées it was usually 4 oz but sometimes more or less.

For solids, I have little premeasured cups that are about 8oz and I would put a handful of pasta, handful or two of steamed veggies, and a handful of chicken (or fish). After her purées I would give her a little bit of everything and let her eat. Some days she would be crazy for her chicken so I would get out more until she didn't eat anymore...or some days it would be green beans and again I would let her have as much as she wanted. When she started slowing down I would also give her some cheese and fruit (she would only eat that if I let her). Again, I let her eat as much as she wanted. In the beginning she didn't eat much, but by 9-10 months she was eating a good amount and we started cutting back on the purées slowly around 10 months.

@hilsy85: we gradually started solids. at six months we did one meal (breakfast) at 8 months we introduced lunch and now at 10 months we are just starting to introduce dinner on some nights. We have always offered a cup of water at meal time but only recently has he started to like it. We do a mix of purees and BLW. We always offer solids about an hour after a nursing session. Also, I would say that it hasn't been until about the last two weeks that he as been super interested in food! Now he is insatiable! A typical day looks like this:

6mo (breakfast only):
2tblsp baby oatmeal mixed with breastmilk
1/2 fruit pouch

8mo:
Breakfast
2tblsp baby oatmeal mixed with breastmilk
1/2 fruit pouch

Lunch
1/2 veggie pouch
some fruit puree
a couple of cheerios

10mo:
Breakfast
Yogurt
Fruit puree
Cheerios/pancakes/banana bread

Lunch
I pack a nibbler tray of an assortment of different things - always two fruits, two veg, a strach and a protein. He eats all the protein and picks at the rest. Happy baby chickchick pouch, black beans and curry carrots are his fav.

Dinner
Whatever we are having for dinner I give to him in cheerio sized pieces

I hope this helps!

We haven't tried yogurt, cheese, or eggs yet, I'll have to ask the doctor about those at her next appointment.

Breakfast: 8 oz. of formula
Mid Morning Snack: fruit + rice mixed in. + 4 oz. fomula
Lunch: 6-8 oz. formula
After Nap Bottle: 6-8 formula
Dinner: meat & veggie (we've only done chicken and turkey so far) and if still hungry some fruit for dessert. I also give Puffs or Garden Tomato Gerber "cheetos" while we eat. She loves these.
Night Time: bottle

We also experience weight issues (I swear we have baby twins in almost every way) so I'm hesitant to up the solids more beacuse I want her to continue drinking her formula because I can tell she starting to enjoy solids more than her bottles.

@TurtleDoves: interesting! Once his weight gets back on track maybe I'll try that...I do think we need to do water more to avoid constipation (which we're currently dealing with :( ). @skibobrown: yup, we got the ok for eggs! And LO tried yogurt this morning for the first time, he seemed to like it!
@Weagle: yikes, if he only gains 1lbs in the next 3 months, I will be seriously concerned...but maybe that's normal for this age? Especially if he starts crawling. But he would seem so little then (16lbs at 9 months?!).
@Ree723: yup we also need tow ork on the water! Our pedi said to give him as much water as he wants, but he has a hard time getting it out of his straw cup... maybe I should switch to an easier sippy.
@sandy: ok so that sounds similar to our menu now...what amounts were you giving your LO?

@TurtleDoves: I completely agree with your pediatrician that introducing solids is important bc as babies grow they need to get a larger variety of nutrients and this is a slow transition that takes time and patience. Of course breastfeeding is still super important but so is offering a variety of healthy and age appropriate foods. I know people that are kind of lazy and don't prepare meals for their babies and basically are giving bottle after bottle...and their kids grew up with all kinds of food issues and drank from a bottle forever. I do not discount at all the importance of breastfeeding/formula feeding (my LO was breastfed until almost 14 months) but introducing solids is also an important developmental stage.

When my LO was around 6 months she mostly ate fruit/veggie purées and oatmeal. I also introduced yogurt soon after. I think around 7-8 months I introduced Cheerios and puffs bc she showed signs of feeding herself. By 8 months she was eating more finger foods - steamed veggies cut into small pieces (sweet potatoes, zuchinni, cauliflower, green beans, carrots), super soft pasta, and rotisserie chicken. She also ate scrambled egg yolk for breakfast as small pieces of toast. She ate this for a long timeand slowly the amount of purées went down and the amout of finger foods increased.

Wow, we are so behind. LO just turned 10 months and is still on two meals per day, we've only just started finger foods in the past few days as well (although she's been having mum mums for a while now so her pincer grasp is great). She also chews well and hardly gags on the stuff we've just started trying.

Our schedule is as follows from wake up to bedtime:

Wake up: nursing session
1.5 hrs later: nursing session
Post-morning nap: wheat cereal with fruit chunks mixed in
2 hrs later: nursing
Post afternoon nap: nursing
1.25 hrs later: dinner - still using mostly organic pouches of a meat and veggies in a chunky version with actual chunks of veggies. Dessert of fruit slices, mainly pear, or whatever other fruit I've bought recently.
1-1.5 hrs later: nursing
Bedtime and no feeds until morning wake up, twelve hours later.

We also try to get her to drink a lot of water as she gets super constipated if she doesn't. On a good day, she'll drink 150 ml (4 oz I think), otherwise, only about 50-60 ml. We've just started offering her raw veggies (cucumber and tomatoes) this week but I am petrified of her choking so I really only like to do it if someone else is around. Sigh, I really need to get over this fear and get her eating proper finger foods!

I can't remember how much LO was eating then, but I know we started offering solids 3x/day, reduced it to 2x for about a month, then went back to 3x around 7.5-8 months. I tried to make sure i nursed her an hour or so before every solid meal. She continued to nurse like a champ even while her solids intake increased. Between 6-9 months, she gained 1lb. I'm not concerned. She eats very well and high calorie foods. Until she was 11 months, she was still nursing at least 4-5x/ day. But, she is very mobile, which I think makes a significant impact on her weight gain.

We definitely didn't do 3 consistent meals per day until at least 9 months... although I can see the pressure if your LO isn't gaining enough weight. We did a lot of fruit and veggies at that age, plus some whole milk yogurt. We phased in meats slowly closer to 9 months -- although DD mostly got those via purees at the beginning. Avacados, whole milk yogurt, bananas, and eggs (of your doctor is ok with those) probably provide a good amount of calories and are pretty easy for babies to eat.

@TurtleDoves: That makes a lot of sense. I'm all for philosophies that take some of the pressure off of these milestones, but if LO is supposed to be eating mostly food around 1, I do think now is the time to start getting him used to it!

@hummusgirl: my ped said foor is NOT just for fun. He basically said, right now it is for teaching how to eat and teaching developmental skills such as the Pincer Grasp and swallowing (anti-gag). But, I think when people say it is "just for fun", they mean that the nutrients in solids are not necessary. But, apparently (or according to our ped), solid eating is very necessary before 1. Hmm...I haven't yet decided where I stand.

@hilsy85: I started the water at night at about 5.5m old. I don't know if you remember: but I posted on how LO all of a sudden started to wake up at night for no apparent reason. He wasn't hungry, he wasn't gassy...would just wake up and seemed to need comfort. Well, I obviously did;t want to overfeed him and have him associate food with comfort, but he needed something. So, I figured i'd give water. Either way: he needs water now that he's started solids, to avoid constipation. So, for us it made sense.
Regarding the puffs: I kind of split them in thirds. As small as they are: I split them in thirds. He just thinks it's so fun and he gums on them and smiles. I only give him 2-3 a day so he will be in the hang of things when we start BLW in a few months. & I really have no clue as to how to transition to 3 meals other than to cut down milk intake. There is no way (my) Lo would eat 3 meals plus his 24oz of milk! Even if I give the milk beforehand, then he will just not eat the 3rd meal. It's one or the other...

LO is almost 8 months:

Here is a sample day, she eats more of a variety than this but to keep it simple...
Nurse: Not sure how many oz she eats while nursing
Breakfast: about 2oz Gerber Graduates Oatmeal
Nurse
Lunch:yogurt 4oz
Snack: Puffs or Plum Organics teething cookies
Nurse
Dinner: Ravioli, Carrots, peas...it varies but she eats about 3-4oz
Nurse

Nurse 2x at night

She still nurses enough so I don't worry too much about how much/if she eats enough at meals.

@CarrieLouWho: My LO is 7 months and just got into food a few days ago. He wasn't interested for me (we tried BLW, then mashed things thinned with some water like bananas and avocado...he just wasn't having any of it and would make a face of disgust). What finally worked was having our nanny give him some stage 1 jarred peas. It's so thin it's practically water and he likes that better for now. Also, now that our nanny got him used to eating, it's much more enjoyable for me to feed him at night (before, I felt like it was a struggle and would sometimes just not do it!). You might have daycare try and just see what happens. Good luck!

And @hilsy85, right now I don't have much to add but thanks for asking this. I never understood the "food before 1 is just for fun" but then as soon as they turn 1, they're supposed to be mostly on solids?!

@CarrieLouWho: I KNOW! This in between thing is stressful...I look forward to when he's like 5 and can just eat regular meals.

Subscribing.
We didn't start solids until 6 months and D is 6.5 months now. Ummm, I'm really struggling to get her into food at all. And since she's in daycare, I haven't wanted them to feed her, but now I think I need to get them to bc I just am not having the time in the evenings. She will maybe eat .5 to 1 tablespoon, which is nothing. Sigh... I really dislike dealing with food :(
