If it's going to be more than 2 days, my mom would come into town.

We also have access to backup daycare or a nanny but we haven't used it yet. I took a day off when daycare was closed right before Labour Day. We can usually manage a day off or work from home if we need to.

We don't really have backup. Our arrangement is when daycare is closed or DD is sick, DH stays home w/ DD on days that I have to teach. On days when I'm not teaching classes, then I cancel my other meetings and stay home with DD. In an absolute pinch we can call our next door neighbors, but I hate doing that.

My husband works as a civilian for the military, so our little ones can go to the military child development center hourly care. It is a godsend. $4 an hour for excellent care.

i have a couple of babysitters i can call on from the past plus i imagine i will call our old nanny - but most of them would likely be unavailable during weekdays, so then it is me or DH.

I'll put out an SOS on Facebook. One perk of growing up in the homeschooled community is how many homeschooled teen girls I still know, or my mom knows and are more than willing to babysit in a pinch. They've been lifesavers.
I can also ask my sister - but I would have to bring J to her and she lives 30 minutes in the opposite direction. And I also ask my mom.

Our plan is to work it out between the two of us missi work, but if it starts to become excessive I may have to find someone to help out....which would be $$$. Probably not even worth it for me to go in, at that point (I'm part time, so no PTO)

I usually have enough flexibility that I can swing a "work from home" (lighter) day when LO is sick. DH has very little flexibility so it is usually on me. However we are enrolled in emergency back up sick care through his work which means we could have a nanny come to our house to watch LO if she were sick and we both had to work. We have not had to use it so far though....

Don't need backup very frequently, but our new place has a more school-like schedule (parent teacher conference days for example) where we'll need backup care more often. DH can work from home and has ample vacay so I anticipate he'll be the backup. We also send her to my in laws out of town during a week in the summer and over winter break. As she gets older, it will span loner periods.

@SleepyMonkey: @Anagram: That's what my backup care is too! We have the choice between using a backup daycare or backup nanny, and just have to pay a copay. We've gone the nanny route because that's what DS is used to (and what we're used to!).

No backup. I can work from home so if the daycare center is closed for some reason, I would do that to the extent possible and take vacation time for the rest of the hours. DH can't work from home so he'd need to call in sick if something came up and I was out of town. It's unlikely to happen, but never say never. We really need to find a good evening babysitter, though, since DH works several evenings per week and we will definitely run into times when I'm traveling for work and it overlaps with those days. I'm just not looking forward to the babysitter search...

My mom or DH's mom if we can give them advance notice. with no advance notice, dh or I can usually work from home. As a last resort, DH's work has a deal with a local daycare but I think that would probably be the absolute last resort because its so unfamiliar.

My husband's job actually pays for 20 days of back-up care at Bright Horizons each calendar year. I used 2 days this summer (I'm a teacher and was on summer break, so LO wasn't in daycare), but generally I don't have need for another daycare, since LO is in daycare.

For "backup care" for when DH and I take trips or something...our parents live far away but are all retired as of this year, so if we schedule it far enough in advance, they will fly/drive in and watch LO. His parents are coming next weekend so he and I can have an anniversary weekend trip, and my mom is scheduled to come in March when he and I have an oot wedding.

Our biggest child care hurdle is when LO is sick a lot--neither of us can really take a lot of sick days all at once, so we try to take turns on sick days and sadly, put LO in daycare if she doesn't have a fever--even if she isn't feeling great. :bummed:
