@Mrs. Bee: I've always heard that too. My lo falls asleep with her bottle at night and doesn't have a problem going back to sleep in the middle of the night if she wakes up because she's a thumb sucker.

But I still worry about when she gets older and doesn't take a bottle if shell have a hard time falling asleep.

Around 8/8:30 we got upstairs and do either bath or wash face/head (every other day we rotate between the 2). Then we do lotion massage and sing some songs. Put diaper, pjs, and saddle on. Then turn out the lights and sit in the glider to nurse and burp. She gets pretty drowsy at this point so we put her to sleep. Usually don't read books at bedtime but we read them before every nap so I usually skip that step at night.

At 4 months we don't have much of a routine yet. We put on her night time diaper (just the cloth diaper with extra liner), put her pj's on, give her meds (reflux) and rock her on the glider while giving her a bottle.

I've tried books but by bed time she just wants to eat and sleep, so we're just not there yet.

@Boogs: the thinking behind putting your baby in his crib awake is that if your baby knows how to put himself to sleep, they will sleep better. for instance if they wake up in the middle of the night, they will have the skills to put themselves back to sleep without needing a crutch (rocking, nursing, etc).

Mavrick is 16 months and this is our routine.
He eats dinner, then it's either bath or shower time. I cream him put his jammies on and then we go relax on the couch a bit while watching some televison.

Come 7, he gets up, grabs his pacifer and cover and goes in his room. We make his bottle, put him in his bed, give him his bottle and he goes to bed. About 30 mins once he's asleep, i go in his room to get the bottle.

Mavick doesn't have a sleepsack but likes covers. So thats what he has.

Bath, lotion rub down, onesie, socks, jammies, comb his hair, vitamins, nurse him, and he usually falls asleep while eating, so then just put him in bed.

I always hear about the importance of putting kids into bed while drowsy, but awake. My kiddo usually falls asleep while eating, though, so is that a bad habit?

We brush teeth, put on jammies, read a book or two, pray and then hugs and kisses. I don't give her a bath at night because she has a TON of hair and I don't like putting her to bed with wet hair. She gets day time baths.

Our bedtime routine from about 2 months to present (9 months) is this:
Bath with a few toys followed by nighttime diaper and lotion massage. Nasal irrigation (poor baby has bad environmental allergies) and PJs with a sleep sack. Then he comes to the living room and we read anywhere from 1-3 short books and he nurses down or bottlefeeds to drowsy to the sound of his sleep sheep. This past week we don't wait for drowsy and have been putting him in his crib awake. We turn on his sleep sheep still and give him his lovey and turn on the twilight turtle and he's been putting himself to sleep. If he is still restless we pat his back.

@mrbee: Great topic! I remember when LO was approaching 2 months old, I was starting to wonder about what sort of routine to establish at night.

My daughter is still a teeny thing at 3.5months. At 6pm, we start her routine:

We whip off her clothes and diaper and put her in her tub. She doesn't seem to appreciate the gloriousness of it all but I think she's finally getting the hint that this bath thing occurs every night.

Then, we put a diaper on her and let her kick her legs around for a bit. I put lotion on her, get her in a footed, long-sleeved onesie, and then into a sleep sack.

Then I bring her to my glider and begin to breastfeed her. My husband will pick out 2-3 (sometimes 4) books and reads them out loud to us. If LO starts to fall asleep, I'll break her latch to wake her up. This continues until she's done eat.

We do a burping session, I cradle and shush her for a few minutes, and then into the crib she goes. She usually cries for as little as 1 minute, up to as long as 10 minutes. Then she's asleep. This all takes under 40 minutes.

With Charlie, we give him a long bath and then change him into an overnight diaper, a onesie and a sleep sack. We also put Aquaphor and lotion on him...

If he's not sleepy yet, then sometimes we read him a book to calm him down. (We read to him during the day too, so it's ok if we skip this.) If he's sleepy, then we just move to the next step.

Then finally, we bring him to a glider and give him a warm bottle of milk. He has a bottle addiction, which we will have to break soon. After his bottle, we will hold and burp him a bit and put him awake in his crip.... where he usually falls asleep right away.

What's your bedtime routine with your LO?
