So now we'll be saving primarily to replace that, and also just to get into the habit of saving a big chunk every month. We're well able to, we just haven't been because we haven't been pressed to do so. It was irritating to lose our nice savings, but this was a good kick in the pants to sort our budget out.</p> <p>I was feeling kind of down on myself for being in a tight financial spot for the next few weeks, but when I looked at it, we've had $8000 in emergency expenses the last three months. We dealt with that all out of pocket - no credit card involvement. DH has been wanting to upgrade to more energy efficient windows. He thinks it's a necessity since ours are old and need work. I don't think they're that bad, but agree that getting the windows done trumps expanding the kitchen (what I've wanted done since we bought the place). Ideally, we will have a second downpayment in 5ish years so that when we move out of our condo our new purchase won't have to be perfectly timed with selling our current place. (We might even just rent out our condo and keep it as an investment.)</p> <p>Once we have the baby, that savings rate is going to be diminished because we will also need to pay for childcare plus a 529 plan.
