@Mrsbells: Yes, they wash everyone's hands after each diaper change, even the babies. The sanitize the changing pad after each diaper change. The teachers wear gloves to change diapers and to wipe noses. They should also put toys in a "dirty toy bucket" of some sort once it has been in one baby's mouth. I'm sure there are a whole host of things that they do to sanitize!

@Mrsbells: It was kinda necessary for us, since I had exhausted my PTO on maternity leave. As much as I would have loved to stay home with her all day every day she was sick, I just didn't have that much time off available, so DH had to split it with me.

Thanks everyone, my doctor also told me that is somewhat "normal" for kids in daycare. Its just very sad to see her ill and then inconvenient to have to stay home etc.

@Honeybee: I think thats genius that one of you stays home in the morning, then one in the afternoon, much better than losing the whole day

Ours has a similar policy. DS has been sick 3 times in the two months that he has been there. Luckily our doctor warned us that would happen and told us what to expect. He hasn't had a fever though so we haven't had to keep him home for that. I only kept him home one day each of the first two times and the third time he still went to daycare since he just had a runny nose. As for work, I have really flexible bosses that both have kids so they know how it is. I am able to work from home if I need to.

We have a similar policy, but since she's an in-home provider, she can be a little more flexible with the rules. For example, if a kid throws up, she doesn't automatically call the parents to pick the kid up. She'll call and give you a head's up, and if the kid throws up a second or third time, then the kid is sent home. Apparently she had one child who threw up every day, but wasn't sick. Just a digestive problem.

Our daycare has the same policy. It's not an issue now (the kids go twice a week so I can work on school, but I'm home full-time) but it has been an issue in the past. DD was sick a lot in the first year, at least a few days a month. Basically, my husband and I worked it out so that I would usually stay home with her in the morning, and he would stay home with her in the afternoons. That way, both of us only missed half days instead of full days of work.

@Mrsbells: Ours washes hands too after every diaper change (LO is 9 months)

I just wanted to say that I hear you screaming! My LO started daycare in May and didn't have any illness but all of a sudden has had two fevers in the last two weeks. Luckily the first time my mom was visiting and was able to stay with her while DH and I went to work, but this week we ended up splitting the day. Our daycare has kind of a sliding scale as far as fevers--I think if it is under 101, they have to be fever free for 12 hours, and if it is more than that, then 24 hours.

When LO was sick on Tuesday though, I called and said she had a slight fever but was acting normal and they said I could bring her with the knowledge that if she got worse or starting acting weird I would have to come get her. Of course as soon as I hung up she started getting all clingy and fussy so I didn't take her in...DH and I were able to split the day so I could make it to my important meeting in the afternoon and I didn't have to use a whole day of PTO...

@Thehistoryofus: Yeah I often do see them washing toys when I am late to pick her up. Does your day care wash hands of infants too? my baby is only 4.5 months old at this point, and most of the kids in her room are under a year

@Mrsbells: One thing that our daycare does to help with the spread of germs is to wash each childs hands after every diaper change.

We also make sure they are washing toys every night.

@Thehistoryofus: Thats very interesting... I will keep that in mind next time.
@Andrea: How would I be able to tell if they are following the right procedures with regards to germs? I think since the teachers pick up one kid after another they help spread air bourne viruses and bacteria no matter how often they wash or sanitize their hands? Do you think there is something more they should be doing?

Ours is pretty much the same, once they hit 100 or more, they have to go home and can't return for at least 24 hours.

A few ways we get around it:

1. Pick her up from school BEFORE she hits 100, then technically she isn't being sent home so we get her home and rested, add some medicine and send her back the next day.

2. Have them give her tylenol before she hits 100. We usually ask for them to give it to her if she's 99 or more.

And if you find that you LO is getting sick constantly, you should check their sanitation and hygienic procedures in case they are not doing all that they can to stop the spread of germs.

Our daycare and most others, I'm sure, have the same policy.

DD was sick twice in the first 3 months but then her immune system got better and then it's just been the occasional sick day so luckily it hasn't been that bad. I'm expecting we'll get hit a lot harder once DD #2 goes to daycare, too, and they can infect each other back and forth.

The first year or two are the hardest because your baby is still building up their immune system since they have the potential to be exposed to so many more germs and such than they would at home. Think about how many of the kids at daycare are the younger sibling rather than the first child so as the kids play together, they are being exposed to whatever the older sibling has shared with the younger one (maybe from an elementary school or similar) plus whatever the younger kid has added all by themselves.

Most daycares have a similar policy to what you described above. Luckily for us, my husband has both vacation hours and an unlimited sick leave that he can use for himself or kids. I only have a limited PTO bank so usually when my son is sick and must stay home, my husband tries to be the one to stay with him. We usually evaluate who NEEDS to be at work more and trade off fairly but since I have no sick leave, I try to be the one working most often. It isn't easy but I can say it will get better over time.

at my daycare they have a rule that after a child has been sick or had a high temperature over 100 they have to be picked up and then they cant come back the next day even if they are better or cleared by a doctor, they must be 24 hours symptom free before coming back. I do understand that they are trying to prevent illnesses from spreading, but its kind of pointless because my baby keeps getting ill there! I assume that many kids are contagious BEFORE they even start showing symptoms rather than after. I had to pick my baby up yesterday because her tep was 101, and by the time I got home with her it had gone up to 102.6, so I took her to the doctor and she advised us to use infant advil at night and infant acetaminophen during the day. This is like the 3rd time in less 2 months that I have had to lose work days due to my baby being ill. I'm starting to think its really not even worth me taking her to the daycare, she was NEVER sick when I was home with her. THey told me that even if she feels better today I cant bring her in today or even maybe monday. But I'm still paying them of course for the days my baby isnt there. I'm just frustrated I guess..

How do you working moms manage taking days off from work when your baby is sick
