My schedule was PACKED....I would have about 5 minutes break between classes coming in-and if I had longer down periods, I had things I had to get done--book orders, planning author visits, weeding the collection.....because I had a library coordinator over me who was making sure we did all those things by certain deadlines. I thrive with that kind of schedule.</p> <p>I think at my current school the librarian before me hadn't ordered anything or weeded anything or changed anything in about a decade. And the budget it tiny. So sometimes I feel like I could do nothing and no one would notice. We moved cross country 4 years ago, and my old job was in an enormous school system in a large middle schools--like we had 1300 students. Since it was a big school system, there was a whole district wide library program--a lot of standards, uniform goals and programs, we had a library coordinator and big budgets. We would have author visits and we were SO busy--we circulated over 10k books a month. My current school has about 300 students, it's a one woman show (me), no one knows what I do and I have a miniscule budget. I do teach elective classes now, since it's a small school but that's not really where my heart is at. There's a public library literally across the street, so if we don't have something kids don't put it on hold, they just buy it on their kindle or go across the street. And where I work now is a lot more "old school". I tried to make it work (+ weddings) for a few years, but I just couldn't make enough money. And I'm not really that interested in doing weddings anymore-- which was the bigger money maker.
