Preschool. We started a preschool daycare at 18 months and he is doing wonderfully.

It would be a nanny because most babies are still on a two-nap schedule and a lot of daycare centres have a one nap routine. I would want to have a nanny for LO up to the 18 month mark and then have her in a daycare for the socialization.

I believe that at that age, the most meaningful experiences for babies/toddlers actually occur with caretakers, rather than with other kids. For that reason, if money were no issue, a nanny would be my #1 choice at age 1.

My super-perfect-ideal would be me be with him other than the 20 hours a week I work, wherein DH would be with him. If I couldn't have that, nanny.

If money was no object, I would pick a nanny who makes the effort to get out of the house, arrange playdates, etc. And then daycare starting at 2.

Centre daycare. I've heard a lot of horror stories about home daycares in my area and I don't want to go through that. Plus, even if it's a great home daycare, you are at the mercy of the whole place closing down for sick days/vacas ect. A centre doesn't shut down just because a worker is gone.

I say nanny. We're going with a nanny when I start work in two weeks. I'm really happy Cobi's schedule will stay the same (naps etc), he'll eat our own food, have personalized attention etc...

I was worried about sickness with daycare. DH and I dont want to have to take a lot of sick days cause our child is sick. I also really worried about his nap schedule. When I was nannying I thought he would adjust to napping somewhere else and he never did.

I honestly don't worry at all about the socialization aspect of a one year old. My mom was a SAHM with all six of us and I was homeschooled as well and I never suffered socially as a result.

Center (either independent or chain). After having sent my son to daycare, I don't think I'll ever go back, even when we can afford a nanny. He's been there since 5.5 months which was a great age to start. He's now 9.5 months and he LOVES it (cried when I picked him up last week because he didn't want to leave his friends!) Frankly, I think he gets a little bored at home sometimes and I love that he socializes w/ other kids. He's in an independent (non chain) center. He gets sick a lot, but it's now or in pre-school, so I'm ok with it : )

Center. I think having babies of other ages/development stages around them is beneficial. Older babies will model behavior for your LO, and the younger ones will help teach patience, having to wait our turn for items, sharing, etc.

For me it comes down to socialization opportunities and structured learning environments (education programs) so I voted daycare center. However, all daycare centers are not the same so that has to weigh in there. We are at a NAEYC certified center for that reason.

My son (11 months) is in a center and I'm really happy with it. He is very social and loves having other kids to play with. Since we don't have a lot of friends with kids or family close by, it's really the only chance he has for any kind of socialization. Most importantly his teacher is a teacher and not just a baby-sitter. A nanny wasn't a really attractive option for us for that reason.

Daycare or home daycare at age 1. The commercial daycare centers by us only have 8 babies in a room, so they still have a small feel to them. The home daycare we're going with only has 4 kids, though. Honestly, I'm fine with either and i just comes down to location/convenience.

charlie started daycare at 21 months, and I have no regrets about that. up until 1 i prefer a nanny, but from 1 i think daycare is great! they learn so much and love it. olive just started a month ago, and now she throws tantrums when we come pick her up because she doesn't want to leave! (she started daycare at almost 16 months.)

if money were no issue, I'd like to hire a nanny that is very determined to help my child on his development (eg. first words, reading, singing, drawing, social skills), but I highly doubt perfect nannies exists especially I had bad experience with one before. So I'd say a very very good daycare would be ideal (which is what we are doing now).

This is sort of a spin off from prettylizzy's thread about which type of child care you use but i want to ask everyone what would be their PREFERRED method of child care assuming costs, location/transportation, etc were a non-issue. I am not saying these are non-issues for me, but i am just trying to decide where to start and what is ideal.

I also notice a lot of people change child cares depending on age. My LO will be one year old when i have to work full time so I am trying to decide specifically for a one year old's needs (e.g., I won't need to nurse him at lunch time).

oh and i took out the options of a family members, SAHM/SAHD, and opposite shifts since I don't have those options.
