My mum came upstairs to tell me - I was playing in my bedroom with a friend. I remember not knowing how I was supposed to feel and how I was supposed to act, especially around my friend, so I shrugged and pretended I wasn't upset. I could tell that my mum was happy (probably relieved!) that I wasn't upset - so I somehow thought that was the right thing to do. That night, I cried and cried in bed on my own. It took me a whole year for it to really sink in that she was gone (she was living out of the country when it happened) We attended her funeral and it was open casket but even then for whatever reason it didn't hit me! I remember my uncle getting killed in a car accident when I was 9 and not realizing what was happening.
