I then replay the situation in my head using that response until I've managed to convince myself that was what actually happened. I am becoming slightly more assertive with family. MIL tried to give D a fork the other day at Easter, and I reached in a grabbed it and said, "Um, no forks, please." She said to D, "Oh, oops, I guess Mommy doesn't want you to eat like a big kid yet!" I said, "No, Mommy just doesn't want you stab yourself in the mouth with the fork since you're so aggressive with the spoon!"
