I'm thinking about following the local custom of only allowing candy in the weekends. Pastries and ice cream won't count since hubs has a sweet tooth and it's also custom to have pastries whenever we meet ppl for coffee. Plus DH likes to bake and I intend to have LO involved in the kitchen, so sweets will be integrated into our routine for sure :)

@Ali: I'm so glad to hear I'm not the only "crazy" one. I must admit I'm nervous/not looking forward to dealing with it, or how friends will react. Thankfully I have my immediate family's backing - my sister will be the same way with her son and I know know know my mom would never give DS sugar! So at least I have that.

I honestly think it's the "most socially accepted drug" and people just don't realize how detrimental it is. And even now when people hear that I'm sugar free they freak out, like how the heck do you even do that. haha!

I love the idea of picking a fresh piece of fruit! I know I would have loved that as a kid, especially because our favorites were too expensive to purchase consistently; plums, peaches, nectarines, etc.

@Honeybee: oh that's nice the the daycare does that!

As a baby/toddler, yes, I'm sure we'll limit the amount of candy and sweets he gets. But I grew up in Hershey, with a mom who worked at the factory and got all the free/discounted candy you could dream of. But we were taught moderation. So even though it was accessible pretty much any time I wanted it, I don't really remember eating that much candy. Except at Halloween, Easter, and Christmas. But even then, we were allowed maybe a piece of Halloween candy in our lunch for the day. Or a piece after school. I'm sure I cheated, but I was never obese (and only tipped the scales for about 6 months once I discovered beer in college), was a decent athlete, have good teeth, was a good student, and am not even close to being diabetic.

Only for very special occasions.. Doctors office, haircut, potty training so far. We also didn't give cookies or cake til recently, only to discover he doesn't like them. We also just tried juice for potty training and he doesn't like that either.

He does get 2 gummy bear vitamins a day which he loves.

We also don't give fruit snacks or chocolate milk, but other kids at school bring those in their lunches so I'm not sure how much longer we'll prohibit those!

My daughter is 4 and up then she hadn't had any candy (She had a Yummy Earth Lollipop on her birthday), well unless you count a chocolate covered strawberry. She's really good about it to. We go to birthday party and she doesn't grab the candy out of the pinata's, she takes all the candy out of the party bags and gives it to me and keeps the other stuff. She does get to each cake and cupcakes with frosting to celebrate. For rewards and treats, I give her stickers or something else instead.

I want to teach DS moderation. Right now he's had cake a few times, his birthday, birthdays for the kids at his daycare, and a quarter of a cupcake now and then when he sees them on the counter at my in-laws.

I think when you make something totally off limit, then you make it a bigger deal than it is, making the child want it more and overindulge when he/she is able to. I think healthy habits and beliefs are more important than only giving out healthy foods and eliminating the rest.

That being said, we aren't giving DS juice until he's older (I'd rather he eat fruit and drink water or milk) and soda and candy are out until he's much older too. Right now he doesn't know any different, so I'm going to wait until it comes up.

I'm of the mind that everything in moderation is fine including candy in a well-balanced diet. Will I let her mainline tootsie rolls? No. But I had candy as a child now and then (Halloween and Valentines Day were the big ones) and wasn't any worse for the wear- I was a normal kid.

DD has had some candy before, but not often. Most of the time her daycare hands out healthy alternatives to candy for holidays/birthdays like dried fruit, nuts, muffins instead of cake, granola bars instead of cookies, etc... And we just don't usually have candy around the house for DD to eat.

Last year, we traded all of DD's Halloween candy for little presents like stickers, Halloween rings, plastic spiders, etc... She LOVED it, and was none the wiser about not having candy. I think we'll do the same this year. Eventually, if she wants to keep her candy instead of trading, I don't mind if she has a couple pieces. I just don't think she needs to eat ALL the candy from her bucket! People in our neighborhood give out huge handfuls, and we ended up with a ton last year!

I agree with the posters stating everything in moderation. Growing up, I had a friend whose mom wouldnt allow sweets. When she came to our house she ate us out of house and home! We never binged because sugar wasn't something on a pedestal. We had options. I think saying sugar is "evil" is a little much, in my opinion..I indulge in sugar but also healthy options, and I'm not obese, diabetic, or anything else. You have to teach your kids how to make healthy choices! :)

I don't have a little one and I have still waivered back and forth on this subject for years now. I wish it were only an issue at birthdays and Halloween but I feel like kids get candy all the time!!!

With the kids I take care of it is a constant bombardment-- the grocery store has lollipops, they get candy after tennis lessons, school does a junk food treat once a week plus birthdays, art club does big desserts every week, there are constant birthday parties and they all give out bags filled with candy. Plus, there are always multiple events for Halloween, Christmas, Easter, Valentine's Day etc and they all involve candy.

I am actually pretty bummed that even if I say no to 50% of all of that it is still more candy and junk food than I am okay with, plus it means I have fewer opportunities to take my own kids out for ice cream or to roast marshmallows for s'mores!

One tactic I do find works pretty well is they get 24-48 hours with the candy and after that we pitch it-- if real food doesn't last indefinitely then candy can just pretend it is real food and "go bad" too.

she gets candy when I have some. Which means tiny bits a quality dark chocolate. And yeah, she can have some at parties when everyone does. That's about it. When she was 1, people kept asking her if the Easter Bunny had brought her candy, and I just couldn't see why you would give a baby (practically) large amounts of candy before they know what they're missing.

I don't think small children should have candy, they are just as happy with ripe fruit. I'm a firm believer in moderation and having a household where nothing is banned. I definitely want to have a home full of healthy homemade food but with treats for special occasions. I think banning certain things sets up an unhealthy relationship with food and I've seen too many kids binge on sugar and junk when they are away from their parents because they see it as the forbidden fruit!

We don't have candy in the house, so I don't really see LO having a chance to eat it till he starts going to birthday parties and school and friends' houses. I'm ok with him having some here or there when he's older (he's 17 months now; there's no reason to give him sweets, he doesn't care). I figure that on Halloween I'll just steal most of his candy and eat it myself till he's old enough to figure out what's going on.

I think a little sugar is ok (none when they're reeeally little because everything tastes much more intense to them)....they have to learn that moderation is key to everything. I've known a lot of people who weren't allowed candy or soda or anything junky as a child, so they binged when they were presented with it. I don't want my child to think, "well i'm going to have 2 pieces of cake and make myself sick because mom won't let me have any at home, ever". Or went crazy when they were adults and gained a ton of weight because they couldn't practice moderation.

Babies don't need sweets, though. i don't want my family or DH's family feeding our <2 year old ice cream, cakes, or cookies like the other children in the family have received.

We do choose honey when there's an affordable source around. But I am pro-sugar of some form, I love it to pieces and think my life is significantly better because of it ;). However, I'm not big on heavily processed foods so candy bars and store bought cookies won't be making much of a presence in our house but homemade cakes and cookies will be there plenty.

Eating all different kinds of foods is an important part of our lives (and definitely the Mexican culture). Although we try to keep him away from candy when we can, I'm not going to take him to a party with a piñata and then not let him have any of the spoils! And it's not candy, but when it's Day of the Dead or Epiphany, of course we all eat the special pastries associated with those holidays!

Totally agree with @looch.

I let her have sugar but I try to do things that I can control. For example, homemade cookies where I can reduce sugar in the recipe.

I don't think we will be letting her have candy for a while. She's only 1 now.

My attitude is that there are so many interesting things to eat in this world, nothing should be off limits. Everything is available in moderation and arming children with the tools to make informed decisions is my game plan with pretty much all aspects to parenting, food/candy included.
