Empty houses can be cold. Bring spocks and sweatshirt. Also we inflated our blow up bed and brought folding chairs to have a place to sit while.vendors came over.

When we recently moved, I packed us a suitcase with a week's worth of clothes, a toiletries bag, and the kids got a box full of their favorite foods and all their mealtime accessories (sippies, spoons, bibs, etc...). Then, I packed each family member a "comfort" box with items that would make a little easier for them. So the kids' boxes had their blankies, favorite toys, night lights, monitors, books, etc... My box had the coffee maker/mugs/coffee, my robe, my phone charger, my slippers, etc... DH's box had his Nook and charger, his favorite sweats, the laptop and charger, his alarm clock, etc... The boxes made it alot easier to find all of our favorite things and keep them handy during the move.

Dishes - that was the big one I forgot when DH and I moved. I had to dig through all our boxes to fix us dinner and then to find the plates and silverware to eat it with!

Echoing some of the above since I'm in the process of this as well - Shower things (I know I'll need a shower curtain if I want to shower). Also, water!

Martha Stewart has a "First Night box" checklist: http://images.marthastewart.com/images/content/web/pdfs/2009Q3/ms_checklist_firstnight.pdf (of course she does, she's Martha).

I just saw that the other day, since we are moving in 2 weeks, and thought it was a really good idea. Linens for each bed you will use that night, shower curtain liner, a towel for each person, and some way of eating-- whether it be prepared food, delivery menus, whatever.

Ugh, you are so lucky to have a week off...you'll LOVE that... We just wrapped up the "big" parts of moving, now we're just down to a few final loads of random crap left (hangers, my wedding dress, a stupid entertainment thing we didn't want, garage sale stuff, etc.). Anyway, back to your question... ;)

I'd say make sure you know where your phone chargers are (oops, just saw APRK said that...I suck), utility knife/scissors, gloves (if you're into that kind of thing...my hands are still just raw from moving everything), if you have everything packed, make sure you pull a few sets of clothes so you don't have to try to tear evvvverything apart looking for that pair of sweatpants you want soooo bad...just sayin'.

Think about your bathrooms... Do you have a glass door shower in any of them? If not, you'll want to grab a cheap shower liner so you can shower as well. And towels. I'd pack a few sets of clothes so you don't have to unpack immediately, dishwashing soap, that's all I can think of at the moment!

Bathroom/shower essentials. That's always the first thing I want to do when moving. Also, any electronics chargers.

We are getting the keys to our house tomorrow. We are taking a week and a half to clean, paint and do a few repairs to the house before we move in. We started packing last week but I am trying to have a box of stuff to take over to the house while we work on it, and also have an "open first" box when we move, which could potentially be the same type of items. So far I came up with:

Toilet paper
Paper towel
Cleaning products
Paper plates/napkins/cups etc
Trash bags/grocery bags
Pen
Paper
Tape
Soap

What else do I need for when we are over there working on the house, and for our first day moving in, for easy access?
