I work in PR/communications, but have done agency work, arts org., and higher education. I'm pretty used to being the minority.

Agency: A little more women then men, mostly white. I think at my former agency of about 85 there were 3 black people (2 women, 1 man) and 2 Asians (both female), everyone else was white.

Arts: Large arts org--Diverse in terms of gender. More diverse than the agency racially, but in the professional/administrative positions mostly white, while the support staff was mostly black/Latino.

Higher Education: Ding, ding, ding: At the public institution very diverse across the board by race, gender, and age. At the private, still more diverse than previous orgs., but mostly white.

I'm in technology too and it's not very racially diverse. Funny, my husband wants to be a cop/detective too. Actually, he wants to be a secret agent. He watches too many spy shows/movies.

- Editorial Assistant (mostly female, and in my particular magazine, mostly white. That may not be true for other magazines though.)
- Teaching (mostly female, fairly racially diverse)
- Aid Work (gender diverse, quite racially diverse in my particular organization)
- Birth Work (doula/birth educator/lactation consultant - almost exclusively female, and mostly white)

Been thinking a lot lately about how some industries have strong racial and gender diversity, and others just don't.

Here's my short review of professions I've worked in, in terms of racial and gender diversity:

* Technology isn't particularly racially or gender diverse, in my experience.
* Media has a ton of female writers, but racial diversity tends to depend on the topic being covered.
* Non-profit work is great for gender diversity, but mixed for racial diversity. Again, greatly dependent on the focus of the non-profit.

One of my greatest regrets is that I didn't join the military... a secondary regret is that I didn't become a cop/detective. Both are renown for racial diversity, but not so much for gender diversity.

Is your current (or most recent) industry diverse? How diverse are the various professions/fields you've worked in and/or been interested in?
