same as other posters, LO had an awake time of 1.5 hours or so. she is a bad napper in general, her typical nap is 45 mins long, still at 7 months.

At 4m, E only stayed awake for 1.5h at a time. So, he would get up for day, do 1.5h and go back down.

And repeat! He took 3 naps and slept 12h (at that time I think he woke up at the 8h mark to eat).

The length of the naps varied everyday but I could always expect the 1st two naps to be longest. Last nap was always a little cat nap before bed.

I agree with @Andrea that also at the 4 month stage, the times may be too confusing. I think at that age (i lost all of LO's nap notes) i put her down 1 hour after she woke up, then it was every 1.5 hours.

@winniebee: pretty much the dsame! Lo started doing 40 min naps around 4 months and finally grew out o it around 5.5 months...he usually nappe 4x a day. We did what you are doing, just kept putting him down at the 90 min mark, although a lot I times it would actually be the 60 min mark or 75 min mark because he was so tired. Around 5.5 months I was able to stretch his awake times to around 2 hours and his naps lengthened.

I would say maybe give a schedule a shot fr a week and see how it goes if you want? But at 4 months it woul have been difficult for me to schedule his naps.

@ladyfingers: my older daughter always had a different schedule between daycare and home so I truly believe they can adapt. So you can set whatever schedule is convenient for you on the weekends. Things are just more unpredictable in a daycare infant room. Babies are on all different schedules and you never know what crying baby might wake yours up early!

He was a 30 minute napper from 4-5.5 months. It was brutal. He needed naps every 1:30/1:45 so there were days when he'd nap 5 times. I tried nap training and really nothing worked. Ulitimately he spent a lot of time napping in the car and stroller during that time period b/c getting him to nap 5x a day at home was awful!

I wrote a lot of posts on HB about the 30 minute naps asknig for help! It was hard to hear that he would outgrow them, but, magically, right before 6 months old...he did. He started taking a longer morning nap, an ok afternoon nap and then a late afternoon catnap. He was on 3 naps until around 8 months and then we went on a loose 2/3/4 schedule. He only slept 10 hours overnight so it took awhile to drop the 3rd nap.

@ladyfingers: Naps really were so unpredictable then. Terrible. I cried a lot. At 6 months we started a 2,3,4 schedule, and life got much better. You could go ahead and try it. If it doesn't work there's no harm done.

@Andrea: Hm, I see what you're saying. I guess I thought it might be harder for them to keep track of when they have other babies to watch? Plus I don't want them to stress out if it's been 1.5 hours and he won't go down. Although I guess that's a hazard anytime -- if I say "he naps at 1" then he's not going down at 1 that can be stressful too!

Maybe I just think set times would be more convenient for me... ;)

@Mrs. Stroller: Yeah this is pretty much what's going on. Yesterday he had three 30-minute naps. The day before he took a magical 1.5 hour nap in the morning then a 15-minute nap in the afternoon. Lots of times too when I go to pick him up, he's been napping for like 10 minutes and then I feel so guilty waking him up! So maybe I should just ride it out? I just feel terrible if he's getting sleep deprived and if there's anything we can do about it, I want to try!

@Weagle: True, good point!

4 months was horrible as far as naps go. We tried to follow a 1.5 or 3 hour awake time, but it was still hit or miss. I think they should be able to follow an awake time more so than a set schedule so early wake ups, etc don't throw them off.

4 months was HORRIBLE for naps. The 4 month sleep regression didn't affect his nighttime sleep, but naps, OMG they were never longer than 20 minutes, and at one point were 7 minutes long. I tried nap training to no avail and then finally just gave in and accepted the short naps. Like magic one week before 6 months he just took an hour long nap and poof like that he moved to 2 solid naps a day there were either 45 minutes or 1.5 hours each.

My baby is 4.5 months. She naps from 9 am - 10 am and then 12 pm - 3 pm on a good day. I limit the morning nap so that she will take the long afternoon one. I just make sure that she's not awake for more than 2 hours at a time.

I would think that using a 1.5 hour rule would be straight forward for your daycare to follow? I find that people get confused when there is a set schedule. They do not know how to adjust if the child wakes up from a nap earlier, for example. That always seemed to confuse my babysitters. So using an awake time rule is easier for other people to follow IMO.

LO is a notoriously awful napper -- unpredictable lengths, takes some effort to get him to go down, but doesn't do well without naps, either. It's improved some with age, but still isn't great. And at daycare, it's even worse. In his room, which is infants 6 weeks - 6 months-ish (though he's the youngest), they do lights out from 12-2 but otherwise nap him on demand. They do their best, and are really good about doing what they need to do to help him sleep, especially when he's clearly tired. But he often logs only 1.5-2 hours total throughout the day. Now that he's going through a 4-month growth spurt and is up 4+ times a night, he's just not getting a ton of sleep and has screamed in his car seat the whole way home this week.

I know some of this is just growth spurt stuff, but I am thinking that getting him on some sort of a schedule at home, timewise, might help at daycare. So far we've just been doing an hour to an hour and a half of wake time, but I think that's hard for daycare to follow, hard for him to get used to because it puts his wake and down times all over the place, and hard for our schedule in general. You can't really plan your day when you don't know when your kid is going to be going down for a nap.

Is 4 months too young for something like this? And if not, what kind of a schedule (2-3-4, specific times, etc) was your baby on at this age, whether led by you or a natural rhythm they fell into themselves? Because he's totally not falling into a rhythm himself :)
