We just got my 3 year old a bike with training wheels for her bday last week. From the sound of this thread we might be able to take the training wheels off in 6 months? She is already really good on her bike. And she is asking for a scooter but I did not want to get her too many things at once.

@regberadaisy: mrs cowgirl explained it well! It's supposed to provide an easier transition to a true bike since you have already established the hardest part of riding a bike (the balance) before you introduce the concept of pedaling.
@Mrs. Cowgirl: how cute is he!! That is awesome! He looks ready for a big boy bike!
@babycrz: cute videos!! There is a bmx type track near my house and there are little kids out there like this on their striders!
@SAHM0811: wow such great progress in a short amount of time!! Good for her!

@T-Mom: thanks to your rec last Christmas, DD and I are super happy with the Strider! Like you too though, I'd like the younger one to start on it soon too. Maybe later this summer... Been also toying with the idea of giving her or both of them scooters (for variety?) too.

Anyway, DD1 does have two-wheelers with pedals (and no training wheels) at school and she can pedal for about 5 seconds on her own! Sort of hard to do any more than that because the playground is sort of small and filled with kids. Her friends helped her learn... How sweet is that? But I also know it's because of the Strider at home too.

I think we'll buy her a big girl bike in a few months and see how she does on it.

@Mrs. Cowgirl: I love the 'look up' at the end! I'm constantly telling WT to watch where he's going. Especially on the trail we go on - there are some steep hills off the side! Makes my heartrate soar!

For anyone interested in some fun videos... I heard about the balance bike from a friend.... I am so impressed with his sons skills!! He even won 2nd place in a Strider Cup race! (Obviously they are outdoor people - and both parents are big mtn bikers!)

On his balance bike, he'd been riding if for a while! -- http://dougandlana.wordpress.com/2011/06/20/treyden-and-noah-at-the-new-valmont-bike-parkpark/

Here he is a barely 3 trying the pedal bike for the first time: http://dougandlana.wordpress.com/2011/06/22/treydens-first-attempt-at-a-pedal-bike/

And a pro at 3 yr 4 mo riding over a log!!!: http://dougandlana.wordpress.com/2011/09/27/treyden-riding-the-log-at-the-valmont-bike-park/

Personally I have a this little bitty fear of turning my son into Travis Pastrana by encouraging all these helmet required sports so young!! He will be in gymnastics soon so he can learn how to fall gracefully! Luckily my kid proceeds with caution still!

@T-Mom: @babycrz: CB is crazy in love with his balance bike! He's gotten really good at it (strides with feet up for looooong stretches) and we will be trying him on a two-wheeler within the next month. He's 3.5.

We ran into a family at the playground this past weekend and their 3.5 year old daughter had just learned to ride a two-wheeler after seamlessly transitioning from her balance bike. They said she got it on the first try! Hoping for the same here!!

@Mrs. Train: This past weekend we had all the cousins riding their bikes (some training wheels/some balance bikes) inside a tennis court. It was nice to have them fenced in :) Maybe a good place to start with your three when you are ready! One one went full speed into the net - and only once :)

@Mrs. Train: I have no doubt that you can do it! :-) I am sure your boys will be fine, and hopefully you will be too! My mom broke her finger helping my brother learn to go from training wheels to none, so I have that seared in my mind. So watch your fingers ;-)

@T-Mom: yeah it's going to be tricky. I figure, I potty trained all three I can teach them to do anything. But I have to be in the right mind set. It's going to be like watching an episode of the three stooges, I Just know it. They are going to be bumping into each other and knocking each other down, it's just going to be a mess.

@babycrz: that is awesome that your DS started so early on the balance bike! We are big fans too, so far. We have a strider.. and I think they say 18 months is when they could start. Since my DS is 19 months, I'm anxious for him to try, but I don't want to buy two, so he's waiting until big sis gets on a bike. DD is doing good on it.. she can go really far without getting tired. I was a little wary about how "fun" it would be without being able to pedal, but she is loving it and I see her balance and confidence building. Just wish we had some gentle hills around here she could practice gliding for longer periods.. it's completely flat and hard to get any speed.

We are avid cyclists so started our son on a balance bike at 18 months. (prob too early but it was a Christmas present) At 2 years and 9 mos right now he rides the thing every single day. My husband gets on his mtn bike and they play follow the leader in the yard. He rides it down little step drops (no more than 2 inches), over every stick he can find, and sometimes forgets to drag his feet on hills - but he always seems to save it before he crashes! We go to a local paved trail and he'll ride it for 2 miles - which is crazy he has that stamina. We'll probably have him riding (trying) a regular 2-wheeler by the end of the summer.

Needless to say - I'm a fan of the balance bike! Ours is the performance brand.

How old are your preschoolers, and do they have bikes/trikes, etc? Do your kids enjoy them?

DD is 4.5 and is riding a balance bike but is still working on her skills before we try the big girl bike. Before this, she rode a radio flyer trike, which she really liked. She also has a big wheel trike at grandmas which she has been riding since age 3 and a Barbie scooter that she received when she was two.. She never really got the hang of the scooter until this past year but it keeps scratching her ankles up so she doesn't really like it. I'm hoping she will hurry up and get on the big girl bike so I can pass the balance bike down to DS because he is not willing to sit in the push buggy any more!
