I had wanted a medication-free birth but gave into pain medications, and boy, am I glad I did! I was also hoping not to tear, and I got my wish there! :)

I would love a natural birth, but I think I am too scared! DH lives 80 miles away during the week and I am getting so paranoid he won't be here if I go into labor. I am tempted, but trying not to cave either--for a scheduled induction with an epidural as soon as I walk in the door!

Thanks ladies! Obviously, healthy mama and healthy baby is my number one priority. But since we are using a doula, I feel like it would be helpful to her if I gave her an idea of what I want so she can help me create that type of experience. For those of you mentioned students, thanks for reminding me that I do NOT want students observing, lol. @sorrycharlie: hopefully your labor will be just as fast as your mom's! @DigAPony: that is a fabulous way to put it. I think that's one of the things I've heard that's spoken to me the most!
@looch: YES to the no episiotomy for sure. I'm really scared about having to get one!

My ideal birth experience would be a calm, zen water birth with no meds, no intervention. Dim lights, soft music just me and my body and my baby.

I don't know if I'll be allowed to do that, but I'm going to push for it next time around. I have a rare heart disorder called Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome and I don't think I'm allowed to not be monitored. :(

I've not been given much of an option. As I'm high risk, I'll be induced a few weeks before my due date. My doctor said that this will probably end up being a c-section. My mom and MIL both had c-sections. My MIL, who had vag and C, said that the recovery from the C was so much easier and faster for her. Whatever gives me a healthy little baby in my arms is a-okay with me.

I just want both our son and I to be healthy at the end of it. Ideally I’d love to have a natural birth at a hospital with no medication. DH will be with me in L&D and our families will be waiting in the waiting room. I’d love to have a relatively quick labor with no tearing.

However I have no delusions about my pain tolerance and I won’t beat myself up if I end up with an epi. I wouldn’t even be sad about a c-section. I just want to meet this guy!

I'm planning a homebirth with a great group of midwives. So I'm obviously aiming to make my birth experience as natural and physiologically normal as possible. Ideally, I won't get overwhelmed, feel scared, or tense up. I want the full experience of birth--the parts that aren't easy or painless, along with the amazing fruits of labor!

Ultimately the hard work of natural labor should pay off with a very healthy, safe delivery for baby, AND my own health and happiness (not just "Thank God I made it out of that alive," haha).

For my son, my plan was healthy baby and healthy mommy.

The next time we have one I'd like a little more say b.c all hell broke loose for NO good reason. Baby was never in distress and everyone was just being complete jerks to me. For the next time, I'm taking much more care in selecting my ob/gyn and setting the tone with that.... if someone is disrespectful or rude I am going to tell them to get the heck out (including nurses!) - as a first time mom I had no idea to stand up to people and completely got walked ALL over. And I'm one that never really gets walked over - but it's just all so overwhelming! :p Might get a doula to help with all that.

i'd like to labor at home as long as possible, although my lack of pain tolerance might send me to the hospital on the early side for an epidural. i used to think that i wanted a medication free birth, and while i would prefer that, i'm not setting it as a high priority--i've been treated with narcotics/anesthesia before for pain, and i was totally for it at the time and thought they were amazing.

I'm hoping to labor at home as long as possible (we live 2 miles from the hospital). I would like to allow labor to progress naturally, as long as it is safe for baby (ie, no pitocin). I prefer no pain medication but am not totally opposed. And I want immediate skin-to-skin after delivery, for an hour, just me and Hubs.

Obviously, this is my wishlist but we will do what the doctor's think is necessary, as long as I am fully informed and give full consent.

@artbee: @regberadaisy: wow! I don't know if I'll be okay with it..maybe it'll depend on my mood then. I think my hospital is a teaching hospital but I'm actually not sure at all (women & infants in RI). @regbera, I cannot believe that!!! that's so horrible if they did in fact assume that!

@hilsy85: if they tell me to go home, I'm going to sit in their waiting room for awhile and scare all the other women, but I am not going home! my mom showed up in labor with me at 6p and they were taking their sweet time with the paperwork, so she yelled that i was coming NOW - and I was born by 6:14pm. LOL. I am terrified of not having time for the epidural!

Quick births apparently run in my family -- my birth mother has had 5 other children in addition to me, and even I (her first) came really quickly. So that would be nice! Otherwise, I do want an epidural but I want a pain management option that allows me to be as present as possible both during and after the birth, but lessens the amount of pain I'm in. I don't need to be completely pain-free. I just don't want to be high during the experience. And I want time (just me and DH) with the baby afterwards.

Hmmmm, with my first I really wanted a med-free birth; with my second, I just wanted to labor as long as possible before getting the epidural. When I have another one, I think my goal will be to actually leave the hospital within 12 hours of birth; I planned that with both kids, and it didn't work out with either one. :(

@artbee: oh I was definitely not OK with a student there! They asked me and I said no but I think the nurse misheard me. Then my husband asked me I thought you didn't want student observers? So we had my labor nurse tell the other nurse that I did not want a student observer. I think for some reason the other nurse thought since the student was Chinese and I'm Chinese that I would then be OK with it?!?
