Always themed, and my mom did tons of diy. When I was tiny I had a carebears party, my mom made my sister and me matching dresses. I had a 50s diner, a pirate party, ice skating, hay ride, magician. My parents weren't into throwing parties. I just had a few friends over and we usually ordered pizza and just played around in our backyard. I always wanted big parties though since all of my friends had big fun parties.
