We use butter and oil oil to cook, and mostly butter for toast and toppings (like on veggies or mashed potatoes) but occasionally we get Brummel and Brown spread. The list of ingredients has a few preservatives and stuff I don't usually like to eat, but I like the flavor and it spreadable straight from the fridge. It's also made with yogurt and doesn't have the slimy feel I think most butter substitutes have.

I just use butter or olive oil, depending on what I'm doing. I don't like butter substitutes-for the same reasons I don't like sugar substitutes-free radicals. But, I also don't like the taste of them.

My MIL will use Country Crock, though.

I think it depends on what you're doing with it. Overall, I prefer to use butter. But for pan frying/grilling olive oil is a great substitute. Just beware of anything with fillers or artificial ingredients.

@locavore_mama: It's about $4 at TJ's, so definitely more expensive than butter. You can make your own ghee too - it's supposedly really easy! http://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-make-cla-163899

Eta: Ghee is also good for those who are dairy intolerant.
