I have my brother's D3000, but I really want to upgrade. Especially now that I've looked at that link on the Canon T4i! Better save up!

Canon 5 d mark II. Love it but I would only spend serious money on a camera if u r really into photography. I am so its worth it to me. A good lens will go a long way though and avoid kit lenses. Canon rebel is great camera to start with.

I have a point and shoot I keep in my purse, its a canon and it's decent.

I also have a Canon Rebel XS. I have been shooting manual and editing some pictures myself.. I am really happy with how they turn out. I can't stand using the flash any more and just leaving it on auto!

I used Mrs. Bees tutorials for help as well! :)

@Foodnerd81: I see. My sister hardly knows anything about dslr's either but she is taking amazing shots already! you can't go wrong with the t3i, but I do love the new features on the t4i. I usually hate touch screens on cameras, but they did well with this new feature, I have to say. The "handheld night mode" (which I think is new) is awesome too. I don't know what the price differences are exactly though so yeah, budget would be a big factor. I found a good article comparing the two: http://www.lightandmatter.org/2012/equipment-reviews/canon-t4i-vs-t3i-whats-the-difference/

I really want a Sony NEX7, but they come at a (very steep) price, so I settled on a Panasonic GF3 instead. The GF1 would be my second "dream" choice, after the NEX7.

After having a dslr, i can't go back to a regular point and shoot. I find that it's almost necessary when taking pictures of babies because they move around so much.

We just got a fancy compact with a gazillion features that I haven't figured out - the Sony DSC-RX100. We splurged, but the pictures are amazing and it's easier and lighter to carry around that a DSLR.

@NYCaliMama: I did see they came out with the T4i, but I haven't looked at what the differences are. I know I wanted the 3 over the 2 based on reviews I saw online. I figure if I don't know any better with the 4, and the t3i is cheaper, I'm fine? I've never used a DSLR so I probably will be using very basic things anyway for a while.
I am planning to get the for Dummies book for whichever model I get to try and teach myself then checking out online tutorials and such. If I get it for Christmas, I've got more than 6 months to get a handle on it before my subject arrives :)

@mrbee: I am hopeless with shooting in manual (also not very interested) but the automatic settings on the DSLRs are so good that you can just fake it. I don't think it's necessary to learn all the f stops and everything else. But learning about composition is important. I think that's why DH takes terrible photos and I can take good ones, just on automatic settings. It's bc I can make good compositions. And I suppose knowing a little bit about lighting doesn't hurt either.

Canon t1i I believe it is. Lowest end model dslr for canon. Got it as a wedding present from a friend. We also just got he Nikon 5100. I've been lazy and haven't used much. I took lessons briefly as well and it helped a bit. We've been using our iPhones a lot lately. That's awesome that you want to learn to take family photos. It's hard work trying to capture all the memorable moments sometimes and I feel so guilty when I miss out on those opportunities.

Nikon D5000 and a Canon S95. But I'm the one that mostly uses the DSLR b/c my husband doesn't know how to use anything else besides the Auto setting. I taught him how to adjust the white balance and use the P setting when the kids are on the move. It's an easier setting to use. He's still getting comfortable with it and I'm sure with practice he'll be a pro at it soon enough!
