My sister hardly knows anything about dslr's either but she is taking amazing shots already! you can't go wrong with the t3i, but I do love the new features on the t4i. I usually hate touch screens on cameras, but they did well with this new feature, I have to say. The "handheld night mode" (which I think is new) is awesome too. I don't know what the price differences are exactly though so yeah, budget would be a big factor. I don't think it's necessary to learn all the f stops and everything else. But learning about composition is important. I think that's why DH takes terrible photos and I can take good ones, just on automatic settings. It's bc I can make good compositions. Lowest end model dslr for canon. Got it as a wedding present from a friend. We also just got he Nikon 5100. I've been lazy and haven't used much. I took lessons briefly as well and it helped a bit. We've been using our iPhones a lot lately. That's awesome that you want to learn to take family photos. But I'm the one that mostly uses the DSLR b/c my husband doesn't know how to use anything else besides the Auto setting. I taught him how to adjust the white balance and use the P setting when the kids are on the move. It's an easier setting to use.
