We just did a medium pile with a medium pad but paid extra for the moisture barrier on the pad for spills. I think we ended up at like $3/ saw ft total with pad ($0.60) and installation ($0.50). I'd choose something like Berber because long carpet seems dirtier. When we were home shopping carpet was a big turn off to me because I'm sensitive about smells. The remnant we have in our bedroom was cut from a wall to wall carpet and it's a waffle weave I believe. The carpet is soft and has a very low pile also good for my allergies.
