Also still pregnant, so no kids yet. I drive a 2-door chevy cavalier. It's going to be a tight squeeze to fit the carseat in, and less convenient than a car with a bigger back seat, but I'm not getting a new one. The car runs great, is paid for, and gets good mileage.

I think kids *can* take up a lot of space, but they don't *have to*. I know people who have had small cars with kids and been fine. It's less convenient than a big van or SUV as far as space, but there are also trade-offs with going bigger. If you can afford a new car and want to get something larger (or need it for multiple kids), go for it! If not, don't worry about it- you can get by with a smaller car if you need to.

No kids yet - about halfway through my first preganancy - but here's what we drive:
Daily, DH drives an '07 Subaru Impreza. He's in sales, so puts about 40k miles/year on the car. About 120 k miles currently on this.

I drive an '05 Ford Focus with 98k miles on it. If it didn't have side impact air bags I would be adamant that we get a new car ahead of baby boy's arrival in January.

Our third car is an '09 (i think) Ford F-150 full cab pickup truck.

I'm hoping we can make it with these cars until the truck's paid off - about 2 years left on that - then we'll have to evaluate which of our cars is going to die sooner, and replace one of them with a new car for me.

Hubs drives a 2002 Toyota Camry. I have a 2008 Nissan Rogue. We bought the Rogue in 2010 before we were even TTC, but knew we'd want something bigger eventually for kids. I LOVE my Rogue, and I think it'll work out great once LO arrives.

We have an A4 and an MDX. The MDX will be our family car; I can't imagine the A4 having quite enough room for the amount of things we'll probably try and stuff into it! Love the MDX though, and I don't usually get attached to a car.

Car seats and strollers are pretty big so you'll need room. Plus, if your car is small, it's harder to maneuver around and buckle the kids in. I drive a Mercedes E class and DH has the GL450 which is a 7 seater. We just got that because we'll have 2 kids soon and it's silly to take 2 cars for when my parents come to visit so we decided to get that big car.

We are in the process of getting an SUV but can't decide!!! Our BOB stroller seems pretty big for our sedan...plus the carseat, diaper bag, and whatever else ends up coming with the baby, plus the stuff for my husband's job that always stays in the trunk! So the SUV will mostly be for me and the baby and DH will drive the sedan and we will trade in/sell the other even smaller sedan. One of the ones we're considering is the CRV though. Seems like a good deal!

I have a Corolla. I work with someone who has a car seat in a Corolla, and another person who has one in a Civic, so I know it can be done. I would like to keep that until we have need for something that seats more than 5 people--I really like the Mazda 5, from what I've seen and read online! It seems like sliding doors would be so nice for getting kids in/out without dinging peoples' doors, and it doesn't look super minivan-ish.

@adnama: Those seem like two good sized cars. My husband really wants a truck, but I just cant picture a truck as a family car. We only had sedans growing up too... and there was 4 kids! The back was quite a tight fit....

Acura TSX and Mazda Miata. We only travel with the LO in the TSX, which is comfy enough for our family of 3. I don't plan on upgrading anytime soon, even with additional kids in the future. My only criteria would be 4 doors. I think a coupe might make it more difficult but could be manageable for occasional use.
