So, I looked it up, and the original recipe was based on raw foods, so the oats were for sure not cooked. But the original recipe uses sweetened condensed milk...I've looked for a more modern interpretation.

6 T oats, finely ground, soaked in water overnight (or cooked, which is what I prefer)
180 grams plain yogurt
1 apple, peeled and grated
6 hazelnuts or almonds, finely chopped
2 T lemon juice
After you've soaked or cooked your oats, combine and refridgerate.

I make mine with a diced banana and a cup of frozen thawed berries. I like there to be more fruit than oats, and just enough yogurt to make it to a loose oatmeal.

@locavore_mama: I buy it premade with all sorts of dried fruits and usually it's a blend of a few oats/grains. The stuff I find here usually looks like the oats have taken a quick spin through the food processor to chop them up slightly so it's not so hard to chew. We've never had digestion issues, but he probably didn't start eating it until he was 2. I will either serve it in plain yogurt or milk and, since my son is a slow poke, it gets soft while he's eating.

@locavore_mama: it is usually served cold, the texture would be more like yogurt than oatmeal. Let me see if I can find a recipe and post equivalent measurements.

She loves cereal! We switch between Frosted Mini-Wheats, Quaker Oat Squares and Special K w/ strawberries. She'll eat just about any cereal we'll eat though. We also add oatmeal and yogurt to the mix.

@lamariniere: I forgot about muesli! I have to make some for my son. He used to gobble it up.

@locavore_mama: I made mine by dicing banana, grating an apple and mashing some berries. I would cook the oats because I like it better that way, but I understand the traditional Swiss recipe calls for uncooked oats. I also would add in some ground nuts, my son loved hazelnuts.

I make a granola using this recipe:

http://www.realsimple.com/food-recipes/browse-all-recipes/easy-granola-recipe-00000000031329/index.html

But with no added fruit and everyone loves it.

We buy Nature's Path Heritage Flakes (and sometimes Heritage O's), and eat a lot of steel cut or large flake oatmeal. Boring family over here!

@lamariniere: I've never heard of this before but am intrigued. Do the rolled oats sit in milk for a bit to soften? Are there no digestion issues eating the oats raw?

Do you use only rolled oats or quick oats too? What do you put in it?

@dolphin: I've been dicing bananas into dry cheerios and serving over yogurt (kind of like a fruit and yogurt parfait) while she gets the hang of silverware a little better. She doesn't seem to dig muesli much, but she's had that too. I'm thinking of trying cereal with a little milk this week to see how she does.

@dolphin: At 2 years 3 mos I have yet to offer DS an actual bowl of cereal with milk, he has had bites of ours sometimes. But I think we started giving him kamut puffs around 10-11 mos maybe, and handfuls of other types of cereal occasionally after he was 1-1.5. He eats oatmeal for breakfast almost every morning.

I just this week gave Maddy (2.5) cereal for the first time and she loved it! I bought an organic banana granola type (I want to say Nature's Path but I threw away the box!). She loves oatmeal, I give her Bob's Red Mill Steel Cut Oats with fruit, preserves, or brown sugar mixed in.

@locavore_mama: I think I've only seen kamut in Whole Foods or Natural Grocers but I don't look for it other places so it might be there! It is super cheap, maybe a couple of dollars for a huge bag even at WF.

@junebugmama: The kamut or the Heritage Flakes? I don't know why the flakes are so delicious but I snack on them all the time. If the kamut - yes, fruit sounds like a great idea! I was glad LO loved them so much because I can really feel good about giving them to him, healthy, whole, and cheap - I'll take it!!
