@PurpleUnicorn: The first nanny got another job and cancelled. Another nanny was a friend of mine that was looking for a full time job. I was so paranoid she was going to cancel on me I ddecided to keep looking. The SAHMs (I tried 2) one had a baby the same age as my LO and she said it was too much and the other also watched another LO that was 18 months old. THe mother of the other LO didn't want her watching a baby. It has been SUCH a saga!

@prettylizy: Yep. We looked at a brand spankin' new daycare center which was a hike from us, but the pick up time was something like 5:30pm. There was no way we could structure our commutes to make it work. We know that we got extremely lucky with our daycare with how close it is, how great the teachers are, and her times. I was running late one day and she was going to go out. So, she was all dressed up and just had the dude ready to go. I felt bad for being a touch late. Otherwise, she's been awesome!

@cascademom: pickup time was a big deal for us too. We both work until 5pm and it takes anywhere from 35-45 minutes for us to get home. Most places close at 5:30ish. If we're running a little late leaving the office, I don't want to get dinged for a zillion dollars.

We started out with a nanny (between 3 months to a year) and then daycare onwards. I am so happy we are done with the nanny and we love the daycare. He benefits so much at the daycare as they read, sing, draw...etc where as with the nanny they did nothing. The only thing is I wish LO would stop getting sick all the time!

We have LO in a home daycare. Out of all of the daycare we looked at in the area, hers was closest, reasonable, and allowed for a 6pm pickup. We can text message her if we're going to be late or if we need to pick him up early. She's great to work with.

We stagger our work schedules so one of us has the baby. Luckily my husband works 4- 10 hour shifts, and my schedule is fairly flexible as long as I have one day onsite. Most days I get to spend with our little guy and I work from home during naps and after bedtime.

We used a nanny for the first 6 months, and then we switched to an in-home daycare. Now I'm a SAHM, but next year I'll go back to work. We hope to stagger our schedules and have the kids part-time in a Montessori pre-school so we won't need other childcare. So we've just about hit every option!

I'm *hoping* to maraculously find a nanny share that would be convenient for us.....but if we don't, daycare will be our next-best option. We can't really afford a personal nanny, I don't think. Although I may explore that option just to compare.
Daycares in our city are $1700 at the cheapest to $2100ish as the average. So...*maybe* I could find a nanny for the same price?

This has been an absolute nightmare for me as we've tried personal nanny, taking our baby to another SAHM's house, and finally we found a licensed home daycare that will take her only 2 days per week. Sounds perfect, but the catch is it's in a really bad area of town. So, I'm still not totally happy. SIGH.

Luckily as of now me and DH work opposite shifts, but I would probably like a sitter or daycare for like 2 days a week so I can make sure and get sleep. Not sure how much that would run and I wouldn't want to burden my parents so I'll have to look when it arises.

We chose a day care center. We don't have family near by and a nanny just didn't make sense financially. I prefer a center to a home care for a few reasons. First off, I just feel like there is more regulation/supervision in a center. Secondly, I prefer my daughter to be with children close to her own age, especially when she is so little. Lastly, our center is very education focused and has a much more robust curriculum than a home center could provide.

@PurpleUnicorn: for the home daycare we will be paying 25 dollars per day. At Center daycare it would be approximately 46 dollars per day as an infant, then it would drop to 38 a day when she turned 18 months. I do know that it is very dependent upon location, and where we are home daycares for anywhere between 25 and 35 a day.

glad you posted this as i am still figuring out what to do! since we live in the same province, do you mind me asking how much you pay for a home day care? i was just looking at some in my area today and filled out an application for one. It's the only price i know so far, so i am not sure if this is considered high or low (approx $50/day).
