The instructor was also a doula so she threw it tons of helpful tips during our practice. Turned out I needed a C-section anyway. </p> <p>Also took a tour of the hospital - thank God we did b/c my water broke at night and we were told to go to the ER while on tour if it was after hours. I think it gets a bad rap for being hardcore and too militant about natural birth, but I'm sure that depends on the teacher. While definitely intervention free-oriented (we had a home birth), the class spent a lot of time on informed consent and the different procedures and complications that could arise. The main goal was explicitly "Healthy mom, healthy baby." It also covered a lot of newborn care and breastfeeding. AND I'm still in contact with the other women in the class, one of whom has a baby about 2 weeks older than mine. </p> <p>But the main reason that I love the Bradley classes so much, is because it has so much information for the dads that I don't think most men would get otherwise. I had no idea about what to expect during labor and I found it really helpful as it was midwife led and she walked us through and we practicied different positions to manage pain and deliver.</p> <p>The other thing that was interesting was that she had clay models showing how much it meant when you were dilated certain numbers of centimeters. It's taught by a certified childbirth instructor RN and NICU nurse who is also Lamaze certified. For $175, it covers everything in one course the hospital charges $165 in each separate class per topic. So, labor and delivery, medications, c-section, newborn care, and postpartum emotional and physical changes (not offered by the hospital). I wish they covered CPR/first aid, swaddling, changing diapers in that but they didn't.
