I just give C an open cup now, because sippy cups weren't clicking with him. His goal in life is to drink out of the stacking cups in the bathtub (gross!), so he got it pretty easily.

It took DD *forever* to get the sippy cup/tipping thing. Seriously like 12 months?

She was interested in straws very early, though - maybe from 4-5 months? I figured out how to drink from my straw around 6 months, so the straw cup was an obvious choice. Now that she is about 13 months, she is able to use the Take and Toss straw cups without spilling everywhere. Before that, we used the Lansinoh Momma straw cups with handles with good success. For water, the Zoli is okay because I don't care if it leaks a little.

@lawbee11: aw poor M! She seems to like it. With the open cup she almost laps it up when I tilt it for her and she gets so excited- though a lot of it goes straight down her chin. So I guess she likes the taste, just working in the technique. :)

@Foodnerd81: Does C actually like the taste of water? We've tried a Nuby sippy cup and a straw cup with no luck. But I did tilt the sippy cup for her--she loves chewing it but as soon as water comes out she gets the most disgusted look on her face!

I think the squeeze straw cup is the ticket- I drink from a cup with a straw all the time and she always wants it but doesn't know what to do with it. I think te squeeze will help.

@Silva: I just hate the sputters so much!!

DS has been drinking from a regular cup since about 4 months. Recently, at 8 months, we added a munchkin straw cup from Target to the mix and he loves it and has had no problems. He hates sippy cups.

We did a regular open cup and a straw cup. By the time DS was 14 months, he was drinking pretty well out of the open cup.

I started with a honey bear straw "cup"

Since its flexible I could squeeze it to get water in my child's mouth - after doing that a few times they figured out how to use it themselves..

We primarily use Take and Toss sippy cups . . . but LO also LOVES to drink from a regular water bottle/ cup, so I try to let her do that as often as possible.

We did a combo of the zoli straw cup and a plastic open cup (that we hold). Those are the most successful--a sippy cup was a big fat fail.

I used a cup with a small lid (like a sippy cup without a valve, I guess). It has two little handles on the sides, and she figured out how to tip it pretty quickly.
We primarily use straw cups now (take and toss, and we have a boon one because she likes to throw the take& toss and then the lid pops off). She figured it out by 7.5 months or so. And she still takes sips that are too big and coughs/sputters on a regular basis. It scares the crap out of my mom, but I'm used to it now. I think its pretty normal.

I gave her a regular plastic cup, and a straw cup. Avent makes straw cups that you can squeeze a little to help them "get it" and it took her a couple of weeks but she did!

We started with a sippy cup, but R just wasn't getting it. Finally around 8/9 months, something clicked with a straw cup. Now at 11.5 months, she finally get a sippy cup.

What kind of cup did you use to introduce water?

I started offering water with her solids and C seems to like the idea of it, but not sure the best type of cup. I started with a sippy cup (nubby brand I think) which is ok but she has a hard time tipping it up enough. Then I gave er a small plastic regular cup and just held it for her, which she loves so much that she drinks too fast and chokes/ coughs and scares us both. I tried a straw once but she didn't get it on her first try. I hear sippy cups aren't good for oral development?

What did you do?

Oh and she takes bottles of bm occasionally but primarily gets it from the source, and is 7 months old.
