I aspire to eat Paleo/clean, but in reality I eat like a typical American with a little Paleo/clean thrown in. I'm working on being better about it, but with our commute and a toddler that likes to eat as soon as we get home, it's about what I can throw together fast. I try to shop the perimeter of the store and avoid a lot of the middle aisles. I gave up cereal a few months ago and don't miss it at all now. I buy organic and grass-fed when I can, but if I can't I try not to beat myself up about it. I use frozen veggies a lot because it's easier than fresh sometimes.

In short, we're working on being better about what we eat.

Ethical Vegan. That is to say, the health aspect of it isn't our main reason. We still eat pretty healthy, but I do love sweets and junk all the same!

I eat probably 90% "clean" and whole and 10% "junk" lol. I like donuts a lot and ice cream but only on occassion. Lots of protein and veggies. I was put on a gluten free diet last January to help heal my digestive system and started easing back into gluten a few months ago. I don't really eat anything processed aside from donuts and ice cream, but even those I tend to aim for bakeries that make the donuts there and home made ice cream from shops!

I would call our diet “real food focused” with no real guilt about “cheating”. I don’t believe in restricting food groups we’ve been eating for thousands of years without issues (like, paleo and other diets, eliminating all sugar, etc.). I do try to limit my processed carbs, but have zero issue with whole grains and grain-type foods like faro, quinoa, etc. And I still eat pasta probably once a week, sometimes a bit more.

We cook mostly from scratch vs. boxed/premade meals, because we like to cook, are good cooks, and real food tastes so much better than processed/prepared foods. There are so many easy dinners that take like 20 minutes to get on the table, so it isn’t really that much more convenient for us to grab take-out/delivery.

We eat a lot of fish and seafood, I rarely eat red meat (my husband eats a lot of red meat), and a lot of fresh veggies. Lots of salads with base ingredients that taste better than plain old lettuce: spinach, chard (swiss and rainbow), mustard greens, bok choy, arugula, other spicy/peppery greens, etc. Just olive oil and lemon or balsamic for dressing – let the ingredients give you flavor, vs. a heavy dressing. Lots of roasted or grilled veggies.

The foods I eat the most of during a typical week are avocados, salad greens, greek yogurt and salmon.

Dinner for us is usually a piece of meat (grilled or broiled) and a side of frozen veggies that have been microwaved (we get fresh for once or twice a week). We have cut out a lot of starches because we didn't like the processed stuff. But we will occasionally just do 5 minute white rice (add our own seasonings if we want), or fresh potatoes we cut up and mash, bake, or sauté. We try to eat fish once a week and usually end up eating out twice a week (once a cheaper fast food option like ChickFilA and once a nicer meal).

This summer I want to add more salads and add more veggies to our line up. Instead of just taco night, I want to add roasted corn and grilled veggies and fresh guacamole. We love all those things it just takes time to shop and prepare it all!

We use an online meal planning service (the Fresh 20). It takes all the work out of planning and the food is made from simple, fresh ingredients.

I eat a balanced diet without much processed food.

We cook most of our meals - I don't use salt. We try to eat balanced but there are times I really want takeout from Smashburger. ;) But we rarely cook red meat so if I'm craving a burger, we go out. Fresh veggies, chicken and turkey are our main staples. Of course I have a sweet tooth and love my carbs too.

I'd say we eat pretty healthy. I cook most of our meals and include lots of protein, fruits and veggies. But I enjoy alcohol and I don't feel guilty for having a burger and fries. I don't "diet" because I do strenuous workouts with heavy weights and I need to fuel them with real food, not lean cuisines.

Right now we are on the typical American diet as well. Haha

Clean eating worked wonders for us in the past and we loved it. After I got pregnant we slid back but I really want to start clean eating again and work my way to vegan over time.

I try to home cook as much as I can and limit processed/convenience foods. That said, I'm not killing myself to make homemade bread, pasta, yogurt, etc either. Other than ham, we aren't big meat eaters so we may have meat twice per week. I wish we could get more fresh fish though, but sadly, we are landlocked. Overall, there is no "diet" per say, but I try to make smart choices for the whole family. I'm very lucky in that I've never really had to diet or watch what I eat to stay at a desirable weight, but I've been a health-conscious eater for most of my life, so maybe that's why.

@Mrs. Pickle: I like this "keep it mostly heathy and not feel guilty."

Mediterranean mostly, with a lot less pasta.

I recognize that I have to shop in a grocery store, I can't raise my own food and try to make the healthiest choices based on that.

I changed my diet for ethical reasons after watching a few documentaries. I eat chicken on occasion and it's only organic and free range. Same with eggs. I eat seafood, but I try to get seafood that's wild caught using methods that doesn't destroy the habitat. (I'm trying to word that last sentence better, but I'm so tired. so that's the best I could do!) We grow a lot of our own veggies, but what I do buy is organic bc pesticides really freak me out. Not everything we eat is healthy, but I do try to be environmentally conscious in all my food decisions.

@Applesandbananas: absolutely! For instance my toddler is a carb fiend! Can't blame her because carbs are delicious. Lol but I try to combat that by making waffles and pancakes out of oats, bananas, buckwheat flour, etc. I think it's a good compromise. I'm not denying her food she likes. I'm just making healthier versions!
I know you're a FT WOHP but it's pretty easy to make a batch of waffles, pancakes, muffins etc in the weekend then freeze the leftovers for weekday mornings. That's what we do. Make batches in Saturday and Sunday and freeze the leftovers. My freezer currently has waffles, pancakes and muffins all made with some version of banana, oats, blueberries etc.

We eat very little fast food, cook mainly from scratch. But our diet has its fair share of "bad" food such as bacon! ;) I looked up clean eating the other day because I was curious what all the big hoopla was about! It's pretty impossible to be 100% unless you grow everything yourself! Everything is processed to some degree. Canned beans? Processed. Bagged lettuce? Processed.

Basically we make home cooked most of the time because we like knowing what goes in our food , it's cheaper and we like to cook. I have a sweet tooth but DH does not and I'm anal about how much sugar my toddler gets. So it's very rare that we keep sweets in this house.

I know to most I'm anal retentive when it comes to the foods I do and don't give my toddler. But that's ok because I don't really care what they feed their kids. I care what *i* feed my child even if it's a bit more work!

And I don't live in a very, umm, progressive area so sometimes I have to search for healthier things but I do my best and have made a lot of swaps and as time passes, more and more healthy things (like nitrate free sausage and chemical free WCM alternatives) are becoming available in my area.

I don't eat processed foods (at least at home :-) ) and I try not to eat too much sugar. That's not super hard because I don't have a big sweet tooth. I don't cut anything out -- I eat carbs, dairy, grains, meat, etc. although I do mostly eat vegetarian for lunch just because I find it easier to cook. My biggest issue is that we eat out fairly often, and I'd like to get better at staying healthy outside the house. It's tough!

I loved Fed up. Is Forks over knives also on Netflix? I eat 100% clean, whole foods and about 50% paleo. With my complete hunger from breastfeeding plus a husband that doesn't eat healthy at all its hard to stay away from some grains and dairy because it's in the house.

ETA: I had been interested in clean eating and decided to make a switch when LO started solids because I wanted to set an example and now I actually want to go back to school for nutrition! It's really become a lifestyle I love and enjoy.
