@Thehistoryofus: I think we are going to wait and see for another week. Right now his friend has the dog at his house, and the dog is just over a year (the vet thinks) he has to be neutered, he has something wrong with his gums so would need some sort of surgery on that (but the vet said that would only be like $150). But they think the dog has been a stray and living outside for a couple months :-( It breaks my heart!!!

I just don't know right now if it's in our budget to take him in....

@scg00387: I scrolled through that picture quickly and at first thought that was an adult holding a child on the dog. I was like, that is an ENORMOUS shih tzu!

Cute! That would be nice of you to take him in, even if you do have to take him to the shelter later or find him a new home.

Definitely a shih tzu! My ILs have two and they are okay with kids, but it depends on how this one has been raised. Some of them have "little dog syndrome" pretty bad!

definitely looks like a shih tzu. I think it always depends on the dog and their history - we adopted ours and he was terrified of kids and other dogs at first (and us). After he got more comfortable with all of us and socialized, he now absolutely loves kids (we'll see what he thinks of our kid whenever he is born!) and pulls to see them when we're walking. He is still a little silly with other dogs/doesn't know how to play with them but we guess it is from being at a puppy mill and not growing up being able to play as a puppy. He has never ever been aggressive.

We love him to pieces! They're a popular breed so I would guess he'd be easy to re-rehome if he wasn't a good fit for you guys (but definitely give it a while to settle in if you try!). My only 'con' advice is that they require a lot of hair care (we do it all at home to save $ and don't care that he doesn't look like a show dog), are and prone to both eye and digestive issues.

Good luck deciding :)

our shih tzu mix playing pony for my niece!

He looks like a shih tzu to me. My little sister has one and she is REALLY good with my nephews. I don't know if she is typical for her breed or not, but she is really great with kids, and they like her because she is still smaller than them.

I thought Shih Tzu immediately as well. He may be mixed with something, but I can't tell.

I'm terrible at figuring out the breed.

Long story short, our friend found this dog outside, no identification chips, nothing. If he were to drop him off at the humane society they would probably put him down....Soooo We are thinking about taking him in :-) I'm just trying to figure out the breed, we are thinking maybe Shih tzu? What do you think???

Also he is about 13 lbs right now, and in need of grooming!
