My LO's preschool does it all. Academics, socialization, biblical values, parent involvement, multiple schoolwide musical performances, fundraisers, portfolios, progress reports, conferences, art. I didn't expect it but if we didn't have any of those after having this, I would be disappointed.

We enrolled C into preschool for socialization, and I was (pleasantly) surprised at how academic the setting is. She has pretty decent writing for only being 3! Their pre-k program is pretty intensive, it seems, but then again, I also don't know what to expect.

None- mostly just the socialization aspect. I expect a lot from that. Any education based materials I expect to expose him to more at home through our own play.

We are looking at one preschool that could potentially do speech therapy with our oldest, if that's the case then I have high expectations for growth in that area, but that's about it.

My biggest goals for preschool are that they model appropriate peer interactions and interactions with adults, are loving but also encourage respect of people and materials, and that they foster his curiosity and love of learning. "Academics" are not the goal in preschool, in my opinion, but I would love for him to be exposed to things that he might not be at home.

I live abroad and as a new mom, I didn't know what to expect. I did know that they don't focus so much on academics. But after seeing how her preschool works, I don't mind at all.

I expect LO to socialize, build relationships, learn to follow directions, table manners, learn simple responsibilities, and if we're lucky, patience. So far they're excelling

Their theme for this season is learning about other countries. The last theme was about being a good friend.

We are transitioning into preschool in the next couple of months (LO is currently in a toddler/preschool hybrid room that will just go fully preschool soon), and I expect them to continue to build on what they already do. So, that would be building better recognition of numbers, letters, colors, shapes, animals, things, etc. Sharing with peers, using empathy, taking turns, not having a meltdown when we don’t get what we want, etc.

Our center is “academic based” but it’s all learning through play and hands-on fun activities.

Honestly, I worry more about social-emotional development than academics: working on transitions, following directions, etc. I think those things are pretty important for attending full-day kindergarten. Many of the other "academics" she already gets at home, like literacy development, counting, etc.

The preschool she's attending is play based and they are also part of the city's universal pre-k program so I'm not worried about how they will prepare LO for pre-k since obviously they know what they're doing.

I expect them to prepare LO for being in a classroom with her peers, how to interact with her peers, handle disagreements, etc.

I do worry about how they will meet LO's needs education-wise since they base what they'll teach on the entire class--for instance with their last class of 3s they focused on the letters and identifying them. If a majority of the 3s already know the letters they will move onto the sounds of the letters. I expect that if they find that LO is ahead of the other kids in her class that they will be able to adapt or help her individually.

Our preschool is pretty academic-focused, so I expect him to learn letters, numbers, all that stuff. We've been very pleased with how much he's soaking in - at 2 he knows all the letters, can count well, can spell his name... it's really fun! They do thematic lessons each month and learn about different things (this month is transportation). Their day is divided into various types of play time, reading, letters, math, etc. so they get some of everything.

I don't differentiate between preschool and Prek, because in my state, PreK isn't available in all location in the public school system.

Our preschool is play based, what I need my son to learn is mostly better social and emotional skills. He scores highly on the assessments for concrete skills, such as sequencing and counting, but where he lacks skills are in things such as transitioning to activites he doesn't want to do, following a set schedule in class, etc.

My son's new preschool is a foreign language immersion school so I expect him to become fluent in spanish. Beyond that, he already seems to know a lot of the stuff I would think you should know before kindergarten.

I view most pre school as more socialization than learning skills. I would like for them to at least cover colors and numbers and would be thrilled if they went beyond that, but view most of that my responsibility to teach him those things at home anyways.

Well most preschools we have been are mixed ages through prek so here is what I expect: an introduction to the letters including writing their names, introduction to numbers to 100, colors, shapes, reading (reading to the kids), fine and gross motor skill development both as play and formalized (ours has play do station or will cut food), and socialization. We have found the best program because they do all of that for him. He can spell his name, knows all of his letters and numbers (to 40) by sight, and any socialization issues are brought up to us (playing Star Wars instead if what the other kids are playing).

We'll be homeschooling. I worry a fair amount, because it's totally in my hands. I have to walk a fine line between being too relaxed due to laziness on my part, and being too rigorous in an attempt to validate our decision to homeschool.

We have quite a while before preschool starts, but here are the curricula I've seen others use and love that I will probably be using myself:

All About Reading Pre-Level 1
http://www.allaboutlearningpress.com/all-about-reading-pre-reading/

RightStart Math A
http://rightstartmath.com/home-school/rs2-level-a-second-edition-materials

And maybe some stuff from Timberdoodle, if we can afford it.
http://www.timberdoodle.com/

All three rely heavily on games. Prior to the age of 6, we're consciously going to take it at a slow pace and mostly rely on imaginative play and read-alouds as the main sources of learning.

We aren't at that stage yet, but for me the most important goals for preschool are LO getting used to a school environment and schedule and learning to interact with teachers and classmates. I would be ok with lots of play based learning because prek and k are pretty intense!

I don't have many expectations at all! They do a lot of play-based learning, and that works for me. Her teacher said she doesn't have any concerns about our daughter starting pre-K, which was news to me! I worry about pre-K a fair amount, since it's pretty rigorous around here.
