@Modern Daisy: OMG can't believe your sister spelled it wrong! Although Kathryn actually IS a traditional spelling and doesn't seem made up to me like people who add random Ys. I have a similar middle name: Lyndsey. Which is actually far less traditional. It's never really bugged me. I think with both names it (should) help that there are multiple ways to spell it anyways. You don't hear Kathryn or Lyndsey and assume you know how it is spelled. Could be Katherine or Catherine or Lindsay or Lindsey too. Not so bad as like… Madyson for Madison.

This is so hypocritical of me, loving old names and naming my kids old fashioned names...but I don't like names that are really dug up and dusted off. Like, I feel it's good that the name still be in circulation somewhat. Otherwise I feel like it is kind of trying too hard. But really, it's not usually the specific name, I think it's more the hearing people talk about their kids and thinking "what happened to John and Mary?!" You know? Does that make any sense?

I also don't like last names as first names. It's odd to me to name someone -son, if they aren't a son of someone by that name!

And I don't like nouns as first names.

I don't love boy names substituting "y" for an "o" or "i". However I don't mind it for girls as long as it doesn't look ridiculous. I have a "y" instead of an "i" or an "o" but since my name is unisex I think it makes it look more feminine. My mom also has "y" and her name is unisex.

@cascademom: I just read that list of names. SERIOUSLY! McKartnee? As in Sir Paul? WTF. Just that list of names and the overuse of exclamation points in that post made me realize that if I knew this woman in real life, I'd probably have to throat punch her.

I don't want to offend anyone because it seems like these names are really popular lately, but I also don't like the substitution of 'y' for other vowels. My middle name is Kathryn and no one has ever spelled it correctly, not even my sister on her wedding programs. I feel like if that were my first name I'd spend my whole life correcting people. I know someone who just named her son Brayden and I just feel bad for him because of my experience.

Most trendy names...at least the ones made up. Even worse if they have an awful spelling. If it has a Y in the name and it's not at the end, I probably don't like it.

Like Mackynlynne. Name is decent I suppose but the spelling is way too much.

I am not very wild about surnames used as given names when the name doesn't pay tribute to one's family or friend. I have a great maiden name that I would have loved to use but I wanted it to sound like a tribute and not pretentious or preppy. ;-) I would feel like I'd want to justify it every time I introduce the child and that's just silly and insecure. Ha, as you can tell, I have become a bit jaded/defeated.

@cascademom: I like that! My parents were very indecisive namers-always went in with a list, but sometimes took a few days to name us. DH and I have a pretty good idea for a girl's name, but if we have a girl and meet her and it doesn't work at all, I'm totally willing to scrap it. I think that's a good way to about it!

I dislike names that are pronounced youneeklee. I can learn to pronounce it the way you want it but don't tell me I mispronounced it.

My favorite name of all times is one of these. I love Maria - but only as Mar-ee-uh, not Muh-ree-uh as it would be pronounced where I live. Alas, I will not have my child spend their life "correcting" people so my daughter has a totally different name.

@LovelyPlum: We chose to wait to meet him before naming him. He was born at 8:30am. He wasn't named until about 2pm. His middle name was way easier since we had that decided months and months before. For our next child, we have the middle names picked out because it'll fall in line with my family middle names.

@cascademom: I'm finding this with our boy's name-I just can't figure out what we want to do! That either means that it's definitely a boy, or I'm off the hook for now :) Either way, I want to meet this kid before I name him/her. Even if we weren't TG, I promise I would be too indecisive to name the baby before he/she was born!

@LovelyPlum: I agree. I struggled so much with LO's name. I really feared naming him something wrong and it not suiting him. My brother goes by his middle name because he didn't look like his first name. I almost named LO after my brother's middle name, but he didn't look like it. So tough.

I can't think of any names that I do not like. We just named our new daughter with a y in it but thats because we prefer it that way. We also felt it feminized the name more. People have lots of sentimental reasons why they choose that name, spelling, etc and I try and respect it no matter how ridiculous it may sound!

@MsLipGloss: Yeah, it looks like her husband is a BYU grad. BYU grads tend to marry early. I'm really curious about her backstory before meeting her husband. It looks like she's got a college education witnessed by the pic posted at the game. Somewhere in there, she got pregnant with her son. Like I said, she's kind of fascinating to me for being LDS and naming her kids weird names.

@cascademom: What gave it away was a picture of her wedding dress . . . it had short sleeves and a reallllly modest scoop neck! And yeah, she's pretty *flashy* for LDS . . . I am guessing she either (1) didn't grow up in the church, or (2) was not an active member of the church.

@grizz: I like that spelling of Hayley. My DH went through the tease factor with LO's name before we chose our shortlist.

@MsLipGloss: Yeah, I'm thinking that she's LDS. Her general image seems so unlike the average LDS I'm aware of ie "fitness model, fashion model, heavy makeup." Also, she doesn't go into her son's birth or birth father. That also confuses me about her since it seems out of the norm of LDS. In general, she just seems so young with her husband's sweeping acts of love, etc. It reminds me of an old poster on WB whose equally young, in love, and naive to the world.
