I used to stay extra and come in just to help out when I was off, but now I have T at home so I do my job during my regular shift and clock out literally and figuratively. Lol

I work when I'm at work. I check email at home, but usually only on my phone. Honestly, though, I like being able to respond right away if it's convenient. Then I don't forget to do it later.

I work and go home/leave work at work. I had a job where I was responsible 24/7, and I was an absolute mess. My career is just a way to make money for me, not something that I want to make my life.

I go above and beyond, in part because that’s my personality and in part because that’s what’s expected. If you don’t, you definitely are not hitting all your performance goals and you’re not going to be as well compensated/promoted/etc. as other employees. We also get *plenty* back from our employer for going above and beyond and tons of support – and “above and beyond” doesn’t have to stretch to more than a 40 hour work week; it just means you have to prioritize your work time more effectively.

I spent a lot of years building a career, working long hours, etc. and now I feel like this is a bit of a lull time because LO is little and I want to spend more time with my family. That’s definitely my #1 priority. I don’t bring work home as much; I try not to bring work home at all. But, I need to keep my career on track during this time still too, because it is also a priority – both short term and long term.

I go to work and leave when I'm finished. I do go above and beyond if I need to, but if I'm finished and there is nothing to do, I'm out! I miss my LO!

When I was fresh and green? I was an above and beyond-er.

Now that I'm 10 years in and have a family and the perks of my job have all disappeared... I come to work and do my job and then I go home at 4:30.

I still get bursts of above and beyond, but there are very few incentives here. It's hard to find the motivation when there is no one who notices or appreciates and no reward for it either.

I've been thinking about this topic a lot lately. My boss is a "I work 60 hours a week" person and I'm just not, I never have been and now that baby is on the way, I'm less likely to start being that way. I think as long as you are doing your job, as well as asking for outside challenges, it shouldn't matter if I stay 60 or 40 hours.

I go above and beyond for my job during the hours I am there (except during HelloBee breaks, of course). I get to work at least 45 minutes earlier than everyone else and I eat lunch at my desk.

Above and beyond, but that's just my personality to want to be uber helpful. Also, I have found that when I am doing more- interacting with other people or departments or working on projects outside the scope of my main duties I like my job more.

Thank you all so much for your responses so far!

I recently had a very early miscarriage and although I don't know the reasons why, I have been stressing way more than I need to about my working style and of course that has made me wonder if that had something to do with it. This post has made me feel so much better!

@alohaorchid: good for you!

To answer your question, I have a career I worked hard for and am good at. I do go above and beyond in terms of exceeding goals, taking on extra projects when appropriate and being available to support coworkers. But I have firm boundaries and only do these within my 40 hour week. My family and my sanity are too important. I am thankful that I have been able to do both in this job.

When I was younger in my first job, I went waaaay above & beyond, even if I wasn't being recognized for it. I had more energy, less outside commitments, etc anyway. Now that I'm married and will have an LO soon, I def do my job and will try to go above & beyond but only where it's reasonable and does not infringe on my priorities & family time.

I'm in a professional career, and I used to be the kind of person who worked overtime, spent time with coworkers outside of work, worked on evenings/weekends to get more stuff done. I devoted so much time and energy to work that whenever I was at home I was exhausted and didn't feel like doing anything else. My relationships suffered, my dogs didn't get the attention they deserved, my home wasn't kept up and I don't think it was good for me surviving on that kind of lifestyle.

I've been in HR for 10 years in a variety of industries and I have seen so many people get burned that I think differently now. I put my family and myself first and I work to live, not live to work.

Now... I don't want any of that stuff. I want to come to work, do the best job I can, work hard, and then go home at the end of the day. I have no interest in working OT (even if it does impress people) or spending time outside of work with coworkers. I enjoy taking on new projects, but I stucture my days to make sure it doesn't cut into my personal time.

I've slowly turned into this over the past 2-3 years and until now I have felt guilty, like I should be doing more, like I should be staying that extra hour at the end of the day, or going for drinks every Friday. But, I've decided that I'm no longer allowing myself to feel that way. Everyone is different and this is just who I am... I'm a homebody and I love it! :)
