We keep basically nothing in our cars because we live in south Florida and it gets to be about 1,000 degrees inside of a car and so everything melts/falls apart/dries out. I just bring a diaper bag everywhere we go with LO.

My husband does daycare drop off and pickup (daycare is at his work) so he usually has some random toys that LO left in there, maybe half a box of raisins, etc.

I don't keep anything in my car. I don't really go anywhere that I can't get AAA. I also mostly drive myself. In DH's car we have a diaper bag with extra diapers and wipes. Personally I've never needed emergency clothes so I don't bother to keep them around.

I keep a first aid kit, some bottled water, bungee cords, a flannel picnic blanket, ice scraper and the brush part of a broom (for sweeping off snow) in the trunk. In the glove box I have a charger and all my coupons, as well as hand sanitizer, gum, and some change... and a heavy plastic bag in case of nausea (I get carsick  ).

When we are driving somewhere, I grab my "travel diaper bag", which is a large wet bag with diapers, wipes, scented plastic bags and a change of clothes for DS. When he was younger, I also kept powdered formula and a bottle in the trunk.

I keep hand sanitizer, a pack of wipes, and some tissues in the car. I also keep the stroller in the trunk.

I would never leave a bag in the car because someone would smash a window to take it. Is this not a problem anywhere else?

I keep everything I need in my diaper bag. That way I'm ready to go whether I'm driving or walking.

We have a few things:

1) First Aid Kit...which as I am typing this I realize I need to re-do with all toddler age medicine. Its got your basics. We each have one in our car.
2) Snack Center: Only in my car, full of snacks, drinks, etc.
3) Other: I always keep an extra blanket or two, plus the girls sleeping spots (cot and pnp), this is just bc of how frequently we go to grandparents.

As for a "go bag", I keep a diaper pouch for DD2 (almost 2 years). Some diaper oils, diapers, wipes. I used to keep a spare pair of undies for DD1. In the summer, I keep our pool bag "ready". Swim Suits, Towels, Sunscreen all in it and ready to go so getting out the door for the pool is less cumbersome!

I keep qn emergency repair kit with jumper cables, flares, wrenches, and stuff like that. I also have a spare tire and jack and a spare phone charger. For trips over an hour I pack a gallon of water. I don't leave it in the car because it'll freeze or get too hot and leech plastic.

I've needed it 3-4 times. I highly recommend knowing how to jump a car and getting 24 hour roadside service through your insurance or AAA. We have had to use them three times and so worth it

I keep a combo glass breaker/seatbelt cutter and a life straw in my car. Right now I also have wipes/diapers and a change of clothes for myself and T.

I’d recommend several gallons of water and some granola bars. DH has a grab bad since sometimes he is hundreds of miles away for work with cold weather clothes, boots, a sleeping bag, several days of food and water, first aid kit etc.

So I actually do carry a few water bottles with us. Even if it wouldn’t be ideal to drink, in a stranded emergency that water could be used to soak shirts to cool us down or water to help cool engine down if we have engine troubles. And again, it’s not ideal to drink but in an energetic totally would.

We also keep sunscreen and bug spray just in case we end up somewhere unexpected.

I also keep a pair of cheap flip flops for the kids in case they forget shoes or whatever.

I have a car emergency kit from AAA. Not sure exactly what is in there besides jumper cables.

I always keep extra blankets and a towel (a towel for each family member in the summer)

A bag with a spare set of clothes for each kid plus diapers, pull ups, wipes, etc.

A bag of toys that stays in the car (mini etch a sketch, magna doodle, cars, music toys for baby, etc.)

First aid kit

Paper towels and wipes

Plastic grocery bags

Stroller

A beach/picnic mat

In the summer I always keep beach toys and spare bathing suits so we are always ready for trips to the beach or pool. Also sunscreen!

@Adira: I’ll have to look for an emergency tool like the one you described!

@looch: @erinbaderin: good ideas, especially the trash bags. I know I don’t want a messy car!

@DesertDreams88: I’m not even sure what to do with those things, but I’ll tell my DH to figure out that part. :silly:

@Foodnerd81: good point about the water. It would definitely be hot here. I’ll have to always remember to bring a bottle of fresh water with us. And good call about packing older/stained clothes for the kids. Hopefully we’ll never have to use them.

I keep a reusable shopping bag with a change of clothes for each kid (old stained ones since they almost never get used), extra diapers and wipes (these would probably dry out in the heat though), hand wipes, paper towels, a some plastic grocery bags for trash. The hand wipes are what get used most.

In the back seat with the kids I have a basket between the car seats with some toys and books for them to play with in the car, plus a couple of blankets.

I don’t bother keeping food in the car and I have read it’s bad to keep water bottles in a car that heats up (can’t actually remember why!). So I just grab snacks and the kids water bottles and my regular diaper kit on the way out the door.

My car always has: blanket, snow shovel, ice scraper (can you tell I live in New England?), umbrella, and some sort of emergency car thing (it has something to slice off seat belts, pop an air bag, and break a window).

My purse also always has a flash light and epi-pens. And when we're going somewhere for more than a couple hours, I bring the diaper bag which always has: pull-ups, spare clothes for kids, a couple pouches, epi-pens, Children's Tylenol, Motrin, Benadryl, inhalers, and Prednisolone (inhalers and prednisolone are for asthma).

We are getting a car for the first time in my adult life (I'm in my late 30s!) and I'm clueless. What kinds of supplies/emergency kit do you keep in your car? Some details: the car will only be driven on weekends, I personally will never drive it, it will be kept in a secure garage, and the weather is tropical, so I can't store anything that would be sensitive to heat like medication. FWIW, my LOs are 4 and 7.

Alternately, do you keep some kind of grab bag that you keep at home but take with you in the car, especially for slightly longer or all day outings?
